Calling All Jet-Setting Seniors!

Big news for adventurers: Starting May 7, 2025, you'll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another approved ID (like your trusty passport) to board domestic flights or visit federal landmarks like national parks and museums.

This new federal requirement is your ticket to keep exploring the skies and beyond! Check your ID today—if it’s not REAL ID-ready, swing by your local DMV to upgrade. Don’t let paperwork slow you down; adventure is calling! ✈️🌍

You may already have a compliant driver’s license if it has a star within a circle like the one pictured abov.

ONLY SNOW SHOULD FALL IN WINTER!

Meet my daughter, Katie, an Occupational Therapist. I’ve invited her to share tips for us all as we age, because OT's put the FUN in functional! In this issue, Katie shares tips to prevent falls. Falls are a leading cause of injury in seniors, but the good news is that many are preventable with a few proactive measures. Here are some tips to keep you safe and steady:

Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise improves muscle strength, balance, and flexibility. Activities like walking, yoga, or Tai Chi are particularly effective for reducing fall risks. However, avoid risky home chores or activities when you are fatigued.

Create a Safer Home

Eliminate hazards like loose rugs, clutter, and uneven surfaces, route electrical cords near baseboards and behind furniture, and ensure all areas are well-lit with bright, non-glare bulbs. Reduce low contrast areas such as dark stairways; you can use brightly colored duct tape to mark stairs or add more lighting. Install grab bars in your bathroom and make sure banisters are sturdy.

Wear Supportive Footwear

Choose well-fitting shoes with non-slip soles to provide stability. Avoid high heels, slippers, or walking barefoot. If you like to go barefoot or wear socks only inside your home to keep your floors clean, consider an “indoors only” pair of shoes.

Review Medications

Certain medications or combinations of medications can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Statistically, if you take four or more prescriptions, you are at an increased risk for falls.

Use Assistive Devices if Needed

Don’t hesitate to use tools like canes, walkers, or grabbers. They can significantly enhance safety and confidence.

We hope you find these tips helpful as you stay FUNctional and enjoy life!

Non-Profit Spotlight: Pancakes for Roger

Pancakes for Roger is a non-profit organization that empowers veterans and strengthens communities. Roger was a Vietnam Veteran who died of cancer caused by exposure to Agent Orange. In hospice, he requested pancakes, but was not able to eat them. Each February, people are invited to eat pancakes, take a picture, and post it on social media or the agency website, in honor of Roger and all our brave veterans.

If you have a suggestion for a non-profit to be featured in future issues, please let me know to spread the good!
