Celebrate Winter Solstice

and a "Christmas Star"

In just 4 days we join ancient and modern civilizations in one of the seasonal turning points of our year - the shortest day and the inevitable turn of our world towards increasing light and sunshine. Winter festivals had many names and our modern Christmas celebrations include variations from ancient times, such as lighting candles, Christmas trees, mistletoe and the Yule log.

As we peer out our front store window at dusk we are reminded of the changing season and the shortest day.

THE SHORTEST DAY

So the shortest day came, and the year died,

And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world

Came people singing, dancing,

To drive the dark away.

They lighted candles in the winter trees;

They hung their homes with evergreen;

They burned beseeching fires all night long

To keep the year alive,

They shouted, reveling.

Through all the frosty ages you can hear them

Echoing behind us—Listen!!

All the long echoes sing the same delight,

This shortest day,

As promise wakens in the sleeping land:

They carol, feast, give thanks,

And dearly love their friends,

And hope for peace.

And so do we, here, now,

This year and every year.

This year's rare astronomical confluence of Jupiter and Saturn being called "The Christmas Star" adds yet another layer of amazement in our universe and the movement of time and light.

May we find hope in the planets and stars,

in the lights of candles we cradle in our hands,

and in the faces of each other this Winter Solstice.

We're particularly in love with the new copper jewelry bringing the properties of healing, optimism, peace of mind and happiness. Just in time for the Winter Solstice and the New Year!

Th'Red Head - a hand-made gift of Local love. Kansas City Fiber artist Marci Blank's fingers have been flying as she has knitted more beautiful hats, fingerless gloves, beverage mitts, headband ear warmers, scarves, shrugs and cocoon sweaters. Some of them are online - check them out here.

PLEASE NOTE - our store is now open 7 days a week. We anticipate being busy and want us all to be safe in our holiday shopping together. Morning hours tend to be very quiet, so are an excellent time to shop. So far we are also very quiet from 5 to 6 pm. We will continue to require masks in all areas of our store, including dressing rooms, and we continue to re-steam clothing that has been tried on. We have hand sanitizer available in numerous locations around our store. By being ever aware of courteous and safe distancing, we can celebrate the season together.
