Although "All Saints' Day" has been celebrated in the church since at least the 9th century, its observance took on special significance for Protestants after the Reformation. While Orthodox and Catholic traditions continue to dedicate the day to veneration of named saints, we in the Reformed Tradition pause to give thanks for all those who have walked in faith and shown us the Way of Christ. To be sure, this list of "saints" includes prominent church figures like Peter, Paul, Augustine, and Francis. But it also includes people like our parents, grandparents, Sunday School teachers and confirmation partners -- people that some may consider "ordinary," but to us, and the faith we now have, they were figures of extraordinary influence and importance.

This more inclusive definition of "sainthood" aligns well with our theology of a "priesthood of all believers." At the end of the day, we all stand on equal footing before God. But that does not change the fact that some who walk beside us also become beacons of light and guides on the way. Some people have an uncommon ability to inspire us and bring out the best in us. These people are counted among the "great cloud of witnesses" who surround us and help mark the path for us (Hebrews 12:1). In our tradition, these people are rightly called "saints."

This Sunday, we will take time to remember these positive, powerful, and ever-present influences on our lives of faith. With joy and gratitude, we will light candles in their honor and give thanks for their love. Join us at LAC Sunday morning at 10 am for this cherished annual tradition, and join your voices with choirs of angels as we give thanks to God for the saints who have gone before us.

If you would like to include a loved one in this Sunday's time of remembrance, please take a moment to email the church office.
