Summer Playground Program Color Wars

The Raynham Park and Recreation Department hosts weekly summer programs for the youth of the town.

Starting on June 30th and ending on August 15th, these programs allow kids to have fun, learn, go on fun trips, and meet new friends. Each week has a different theme and this past week was Color Wars!

"The Summer Playground Program has been crushing Color Wars this week! The Fun Run was a blast—bright colors, big laughs, and unforgettable memories!" The winners ended up being the Blue Team, and the department posted, "Congrats on an awesome win!"

The programs are so popullar that they fill up each year, as do most Raynham Recreation programs. For those wanting to participate, sign up early!

Historical Tidbit:

Ship Building in Raynham

Ship building was part of Raynham's early economy.

Ridges were cut into the banks of the Taunton River for cradles for the boats. The ridges were then used as staging and as a means to shore up, or brace the ships.

The timbers were floated across the Taunton River to the approximate site of the staging areas and then dragged up the banks to the ships by oxen.

The small schooners that were built this way weren't completely finished in Raynham.

In the spring, when the water was usually the highest, they were sailed down river to Berkley or Fall River for the final fittings.

The property where the shipbuilding took place was owned by the Reverend Silas Hall and other members of the Hall family.

Climate Can-Do:

Farm Fresh Eggs

The eggs that you buy may have an impact on your overall health. Knowing where your eggs come from is important to understanding the nutritional values that you are getting from your eggs and the quality of the eggs you buy. Overall, eggs that come from free-range chickens are preferable.

Free-range: chickens have access to the outdoors and can participate in natural behaviors such as nesting and laying eggs. This is the style most commonly used by smaller local farms.

Cage-free: chickens are not kept in cages, but have little to no access to the outdoors.

Studies have shown the following benefits of free-range eggs over cage-free eggs:

⅓ less cholesterol

¼ less saturated fat

⅔ more Vitamin A

3X more Vitamin E

7X more beta-carotene

2X Omega-3 fatty acids

In addition, free-range eggs are 6X higher in Vitamin D, have significantly more B Vitamins, and contain more antioxidants.

Make sure to shop locally for high-quality, nutritional eggs!

SRO Lang's Juvenile Police Academy Summer Program

Committed to student and youth safety, School Resource Officer Jennifer Lang proudly cares for and educates the youth of the district. From the Raynham Police Department website, "As a vital link between the school district and the police department, SRO Lang plays multiple roles within the school community—acting as a teacher, counselor, mentor, and advocate for students, families, faculty, and staff. Importantly, the SRO is not a disciplinarian; instead, SRO Lang fosters a positive relationship with students and is a readily accessible resource for their needs".

For a week this summer, SRO Lang held a juvenile police academy program to teach kids in the community what it is like to be an officer and what training they would go through. This Park and Recreation program allows these young people to get out and meet new friends, as well as learn something new during the summer. There are demonstrations done by both the Raynham Fire Department and SEMLEC K-9, too.

As said in posts from the Raynham Police Department, " Many thanks to the Raynham Fire Department and SEMLEC K-9 for their demonstrations," and "Thank you to all who assisted and attended".

The camp had a large turnout and was deemed quite a success by the community!

Beaching It

“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

“An empty beach is a perfect place to both fill and empty the mind!”

~ Mehmet Murat ildan

“My life is like a stroll upon the beach, as near to the ocean’s edge as I can go.”

~ Henry David Thoreau

“At the beach, life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun.” ~ Sandy Gingras

“The waves sweep into us. Their unending rhythm comforts me. These waves were here when we were kids. They were here during my last visit. They were here during all the years I was somewhere else. The waves are here whether I am thinking about them or not. They simply exist. Here before we were born. Here after we die. These waves, rolling in and receding out. Constant.” ~ Dallas Woodburn

Suddenly, here I am, toes in the sand, as if I never left, as if all else is a dream. Time stands still.

I hope you are enjoying summer ; ) ~ Jacquie
