Hello Dear
Alumni, learners and friends of ACVA! We hope that each of you are somehow doing well, or at least well enough, these days, and that you have reason to celebrate the Equinox. It does appear that there is reason to expect improved energy from the planets, soon.
It’s been quite a lot to handle lately, hasn’t it? Debilitated Jupiter, and Mars and Rahu closing in on each other. And the Kala Sarpa yoga in place for what seems like a long time. However, Jupiter is moving towards a better sign, Venus is currently exalted, and the Sun will soon be exalted too Even Rahu/Ketu are exalted for the entire year. We can choose to focus on the bright side of the stars, while we keep our wits about us.
ACVA has been very busy with a new class of lively students. Our instructors are reporting the satisfaction of nurturing a fresh cohort of enthusiastic learners. If may be that Jupiter currently in Capricorn is prompting students to focus on creating a practical application of the ancient wisdom of Jyotisha. And since Ketu is one of the karakas of Jyotisha, Ketu’s current exalted position in Scorpio makes this a great time to study Jyotish! (Actually, any time is a good time to study Jyotisha.)

MARCH -JUNE 2021
Hello readers,
Ramdas Bill Sinclair is taking a sabbatical from ACVA this season, and I will fill in with the Spring 2021 season Star Guidance. As we reflect upon the profound changes in the stars and planets which culminated in the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction of December, 2020, we are also most grateful to have passed through the crucible of the most intense Rahu/Ketu convergences of many decades if not centuries. And then there was the behavior of Mars, which made its closest pass to the earth at the opposition to the Sun last year, which astrologers also know as the time when Mars appears to slow down, stop, and move backwards against the stars – the Retrograde.

MARS AND THE RED MIST
Most of us in the United States remember the title of a popular book, “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.” While the reality of being identified as a male or female human is really more complex, we can all relate and laugh at the concept that we really belong on different planets.
For thousands of years, people have paid attention to that red-colored wanderer in the sky known as Mars in western astrology, but we should remember that he has many other names and deities around the world. In India the most commonly known names are Mangala and Kuja. The second son of Shiva, known as Karttikeya or Skanda, he was said to have been conceived in an elaborate manner with the aid of divine forces, as Shiva was totally immersed in austerities. His semen was transported to a sacred spot where three rivers joined, where the holy city of Kashi (now known as Benares) was built. In all of his many names and forms he is associated with young men, and he is considered chaste or married to his army. In South India, many worship him as Murugan. So in the Hindu tradition he does not have the association with sexuality but with activity, aggression and the austerities of meditative practices.

QUESTION AND ANSWER WITH LYNN BOOTES
n ACVA student asks: Where can I find a list of the chakras and planets? A quick internet search gave lots of different answers. If I heard correctly, you put the Moon as the left eye and the left channel, pingala. So the Sun would be the right eye and the right channel, ida? As the Sage Parasara might have said, “this is a very insightful question, O Student!” There are three reasons you are finding inconsistent information. First, a random internet search for matters related to esoteric knowledge tends to produce confusion because it is a random process. Subtleties of a number of different traditions and teachers are sampled at random. It is precisely for this reason why a serious student of Jyotish needs to find a teacher or school with a consistent and coherent approach. One of the really wonderful things about Jyotish is that over thousands of years of instruction, both written and oral, there is a core base of knowledge and competency. As one goes beyond the basics, there may be subtle differences on certain matters, as taught from various texts of by various teachers. But the teachers acknowledge the traditions and their own teachers. Whereas, the person with the “Random Internet Search” as a teacher ends up with a confusing mess.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ACVA STUDENTS!
|
The Leadership Team at ACVA wants to recognize the success of our hard-working students, who have the desire to really learn Jyotish, and have demonstrated their effort. While these Level I Jyotish Ratna students have not completed the Level I certificate, they are well on their way.
We have a dedicated group of students who are midway or further in the Level I course.Tutor Karina Weil had this to say about one of them, who has just completed the most difficult section, Course 106: “Most of all I am pleased with her determination, perseverance, punctiliousness, and serious-mindedness throughout long and strenuous months.” They are only a few more courses away from being eligible to take the Jyotish Ratna Certificate Exam.
We also have a fresh group of new Course 101 students, who also have a most challenging task, getting started, getting used to how we work at ACVA, while diving into an introduction to the universe from the Vedic point of view. ACVA tutors share the same concern - will our new group, who are like new garden sprouts, grow and thrive? We are like gardeners hovering over our box of seedlings waiting to see how they will do. To our new group: ask your questions of tutors, and post your first work, however hesitant. You will grow into it.
Namaste,
