Urban League of San Diego County | | From the President's Desk | | |
Dear Urban Beat Community,
As I mentioned earlier this month, I am thrilled to share some exciting initiatives that reflect our commitment to education and economic self-sufficiency, which are ethical and compassionate opportunities.
First, we are proud to announce the launch of our Housing Down Payment Assistance Program for Teachers! We recognize educators' vital role in shaping our communities and want to support them in achieving homeownership. This program is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible teachers, helping them secure a place to call home in the neighborhoods they serve. Housing Opportunities for Public Educators (H.O.P.E.), the Teacher Housing Grant Program is a unique opportunity provided by Lennar Home construction company and Councilmember Marni von Wilpert designed to help certified educators, teaching in San Diego Council District 5 achieve the dream of homeownership in San Diego County. By offering financial assistance, mandatory counseling, and guidance through the home-buying process, this program ensures that teachers can focus on building their futures while contributing to their communities and living in the communities that they serve. We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about the program using this link.
We invite you to attend our annual Golden Pyramid Scholars Program and College Signing Day at Grossmont College on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 2 p.m. This inspiring event celebrates the academic achievements of our brightest students and recognizes their hard work, perseverance, and excellence. You won’t want to miss this day of recognition, motivation, and community pride.
We remain committed to initiatives that uplift and empower our community, and we look forward to your participation in these impactful programs. Thank you for your continued support in building a stronger, more inclusive future for all.
Please stay tuned for upcoming messages, video podcasts, and events supporting our diverse community.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
Sincerely,
Al Abdallah
President & CEO

-
High School Students, in grades 8th, 9th , 10th, 11th and 12th

A few notes to consider:
- We will have enough seats for the audience, unlike the previous year, but still encourage the family to bring their comfortable chairs
- We encourage elected officials and community leaders to help hand out medals, proclamations, scholarships, and certificates for opportunities but will limit talking opportunities so the program is not long.

Todays Survival in America – “Nuthin but a G’Thang”
BY HERMAN C. COLLINS, Public Affairs Consultant
URBAN LEAGUE OF SAN DIEGO COUNTY
The term “G’ Thang” was popularized by Dr. Dre's highly successful single from the album “The Chronic”. To generically explain G’Thang is to describe what the gangster in doing, wearing, saying or down with.
So is this a column about gangs? No, G’Thang in this connotation means “Good Thing”.
There is growing concern among Americans regarding the legality, morality and swiftness of the new administrations election mandate to remove Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies from the government lexicon. This is happening as part of the federal government reorganization, and changes to the presidency which some feel could affect the structure of American democracy.
We are experiencing a rollback of civil rights legislation, ending birthright citizenship, overturning court reforms defining views on race, gender equity, and humanitarian concerns for families.
The inaugural speech promised to "fully restore America”.

We want to help you with tools to "Thrive in 2025"!
Do you have a business that provides health and wellness for individuals and families in the County of San Diego, Orange County, or the Inland Empire?
We are creating a Health & Wellness Directory housed on the Urban League of San Diego County website. This will include a behavioral health directory and a general health and wellness directory. According to the attendees of our Fireside Chats, areas in our communities lack health resources and need more urgent care facilities, especially ones open after 5 p.m. Our young families need a directory and a resource toolkit that includes accepted insurance information and medical professionals with cultural sensitivity training for diverse community members. This will be an online business list versus a case management site. Individuals will be directed to contact hotlines if they need to speak to a live person or need case management services.
This can be mental health, medical health, doula professional health, promotoras/ community health worker, physical health, fitness, or nutritional health businesses. This can be small, extensive, private practice, or consulting businesses.
