THIS SUNDAY

Sunday, July 19, 2026

After the smoke has hopefully cleared, join us this third Sunday in July for worship! Pastor Don Ackerman will offer a special message entitled Wheat, Weeds and the Truth About Us. The Gospel reading this week presents a perhaps timely parable about the burning of weeds, and Julie Smith and the Sunday School team will lead our youngest congregants through their part of the Sabbath day.

Our readings this Sunday are:

Psalm 139: 1 - 12, 23 - 24

Matthew 13: 24 - 30, 36 - 43

Joanne Spees

Our church will host a memorial service for Joanne Spees on
Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow.

If you were in church on Sunday, July 5, you heard Jane Fleischer's and Stephanie Bradford's reports about their feelings and experiences around this year's Conference and Conference in general.

But to see a special video of the kinds of things that took place there, and to read a thorough telling of what all of the participants experienced this year, please visit this page:

How Can I Help?
What Can I Do?

Thank you to everyone who has responded
to our call for volunteers so far!

But we STILL need people - MAYBE EVEN YOU -

to fill key volunteer roles!

None of these tasks are difficult

and they don't take up much time,

but they are very important in the life of your church

If you've been thinking about

wanting to do more for your church,

here are some ways you could do just that!

Make music this summer
If you play an instrument or sing,
you can do so during one of our summer worship services!

Please contact Beth Polen

Join our A/V team
If you are already in church on Sunday morning,
why not volunteer one Sunday a month
to help run our audio and visual equipment?
It's not difficult, no experience or technical knowledge is necessary,
and you will be trained on the job!

Please contact Pastor Mary Jo if you are interested

Become a Sunday caretaker
We need people every Sunday to stay after church
and make sure all of the lights are turned off

and the building is secure

You will also have to stay through
the Sunday afternoon meal in Wesley Hall, usually until about 2 pm

Please contact Ron Leonard
if you can do this even one Sunday a month,

or even one Sunday every two months!

Flowers

We are grateful to
David Boettler for his donation of these beautiful flowers on the north side of our building facing Tuscarawas. If you haven't seen them, be sure and look at them when you have a chance. They help present a beautiful face of our church!

This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.

The church that has stood on this corner since 1864 has long had an interesting and unique relationship with women.

Sometime after 1833, when the church was on a different downtown Canton property, the congregation at that time decided to start something called the Canton Female Seminary, an unprecedented attempt to apparently train women for officially recognized ministry.

And later on, as the 20th century got rolling along, this church founded many groups for religious study and service for women, and a look through the photo archives shows that many of the Sunday School classes during the 1910s, 20s and 30s were made up entirely of or at least in the majority by women.

We will touch more on that seminary in a future From the Archives feature. But this week, we present these photo collages that our own church historian Virginia Gingrich decided to make at some point when she was perhaps herself thinking about women in the church. Virginia made these collages to highlight just some of the women who have worked for the church in various support roles over several decades.

In continuity with those women, our church in 2026 is still a place for women to both support and lead. Our own Pastor Mary Jo, Lilly Brunoni, Julie Smith, Beth Polen and Kristina Belliveau serve in key leadership roles, and it is not an exaggeration to say that entire aspects of the church's very existence depend upon these capable women. But then there's also Nancy Davis who is here nearly every Sunday handing out bulletins, or Jane Fleischer who does a little bit of everything (whatever we need her to do), or Karen Zotta directing our handbell choir, or Megan Smith and the Community Action group, Erin Ackerman and The Village, Betty Kennedy and our diaper ministry, Amy Rivers and Women's Coffee Talk, the women on our Leadership Council, Stephanie, Renee, Lisa (and of course Jane).

Like the women in these photos, these names represent just a few of the women supporting and leading our congregation today, in the finest tradition of the church we now call Crossroads.
