APLF Board President's Message

Hello Library Lovers and Supporters,

Fall in Albuquerque has gotten off to a great start for book lovers with Joy Harjo at Albuquerque’s Kimo Theater on September 26. We hope you could attend. And that was just the beginning of what fall will bring.

Albuquerque Public Library Foundation will also partner with Bookworks for A Word with Writers on November 19, featuring Dean Norris at the South Broadway Cultural Center. Mr. Norris will discuss his new book, Do What You’re Gonna Do: The Definitive Oral History of Breaking Bad. Many of you will recognize Dean Norris as Breaking Bad’s DEA agent, Hank Schrader.

If you're looking for family fun, join APLF at the Cosmic Carnival on October 17th; we will be there handing out bookmarks and information about the Foundation. A member of the Public Library's STEM staff will be present to demonstrate popular STEM projects funded by donations to APLF, and that and other displays will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a star party from 6 to 10 p.m. This is our opportunity to share the Foundation's mission with a new demographic, and we invite Albuquerque community members to support us with a donation. And don't forget: the event is FREE!

The Foundation is starting its Fall fundraising effort. Everyone who can is invited to donate and support the Foundation's mission. We at the Albuquerque Public Library Foundation value each and every one of our supporters, and we know that you love our libraries as much as we do.

National Book Month

October is National Book Month! Whether you follow the month's weekly themes or you just curl up with a new book from your library, make sure you find some time to read this month.

Reading is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

  • Reading reduces stress.
  • Reading provides "slow dopamine."
  • Reading helps us learn new things.
  • Reading expands your vocabulary.

October 4 - 10

Mystery Series Week

Ask your local librarian what a mystery author they would recommend. Maybe they'll recommend a classic read, a new author, or something spooky for Halloween.

October 11 - 17

National Newspaper Week

Our library not only has physical copies of newspapers for you to read and enjoy, you can also access newspapers for free on Press Reader with your library card.

October 18 - 24

Teen Read Week

Revisit a favorite read from when you were younger, speak with a youth in your life about what they are reading, or ask your local librarian what they recommend to understand the kids today.

2 Ways You Can Make an Impact

Vote Yes for Library Bonds

Did you know that all the library materials and applications that you utilize--

  • Books & Audiobooks
  • Magazines
  • Music CDs & DVDs
  • Over Drive
  • Hoopla
  • Press Reader
  • Naxos Music Library

--are all paid for through the bonds that are on the ballot each November?

That's right! The city, county, and state bonds on the ballots are how the library provides all of these things and more!

And did you know the American Library Association reports that Gen Z & Millennials are visiting the library and prefer print books? That means library materials are important for all generations.

Please remember to vote YES for the library bonds.

The library can't do this without YOU!

Early voting has begun. You can find a polling place here.

Leave a Legacy | Estate Planning Month

Each October across the United States, individuals and families are reminded of the importance of creating and/or maintaining an estate plan. Estate planning is for everyone, and being prepared gives you a meaningful gift to leave your heirs or organizations.

When you review or draft your estate planning documents, we encourage you to keep APLF in mind as a beneficiary.

Learn more about how you can Leave a Legacy on our Website.

APLF recommends seeking advice from your financial advisor, lawyer, or tax professional.

Support the Library while Grocery Shopping

Smith’s Inspiring Donations will donate 0.5% of all eligible spending to APLF that customers have linked to their shoppers card.

This no-cost program makes donating easy based on the shopping you do every day.

Once you link your shoppers card to APLF with code CW809, all you have to do is keep shopping at Smith's and swiping your shopper’s card at check-out.

Link your card today!
