Ever Wonder Why Eggs and Bunnies Are a Part of Easter?
Once March rolls around stores seem to be full of chocolate eggs, bunnies, and pastel-colored candies. Where did these traditions start?
- Colored Easter eggs originated in Mesopotamia, between 8000 and 2000 B.C.
- The Orthodox Churches picked up the tradition, after which it spread to Western Europe and, later, the U.S.
- These eggs represent new life and rebirth.
- Many believe the Easter bunny arrived with German immigrants in the 1700s.
- This group had an old tradition of an egg-laying hare (wild rabbit) called the Osterhase.
- Children of these immigrants would make nests where this creature could lay its colored eggs.
Nowadays, both egg-dying and the Easter bunny are mostly related to candy and egg hunts, but we can still appreciate how many centuries these traditions have been around!
