Historical Tidbit:

Early Fire Fighting

Fire Stations started with hand-drawn pumps and then later advanced to horse-drawn steam pumpers in the early 1900's. All of these devices required some form of notification of the fire; usually a church bell or steam whistle.

The steampumper had to be moved by horses, which were often being used by a road gang. The horses were gathered and brought back to the station to pull the equipment out of the station. Workers then lit the fire in the boiler and then traveled to the fire. They weren't able to save a lot of buildings, but they were able to control the spread to adjoining buildings and fields.

Before fire brigades, buildings were smaller and not as close together. There were fewer trees, which helped control the spread of fires. If a building caught on fire, there was little that could be done. Clearcutting of forests was not only done to provide building materials, and fuel for homes and foundries, but also as a means to control the spread of forest fires. Can you imagine a forest fire today with no fire department or hydrants available?

Open House of Rev. James Keith

Sun, Jul 14

12-3p

199 River St

The Keith Parsonage was built in 1662 to house the town’s first minister, Rev. James Keith. During King Philip’s War, the town voted to use the parsonage as a garrison house for the protection of the town’s inhabitants.

Today, the home contains many examples of life in Colonial America including a hearth with a bee-hive oven and hand-hewn beams.

The parsonage is now owned by the Old

Bridgewater Historical Society and several of the society’s board of directors will be there on July 14th to conduct tours.

Climate Can Do:

Seasonal Food and Farmers Markets

Going to a farmers market is a wonderful activity to do with family, friends, or alone, and it also helps the planet.

Local and Seasonal Food

Farmers markets sell primarily local food. Vendors travel from their farms to the market. Because the food travels a shorter distance from the farm to the consumer, less gas is burned for transportation. Local produce is seasonal— strawberries in late spring and early summer, peaches and watermelon in the middle of summer, grapes and apples in the fall, squashes in the winter. It is fresh, nutrient rich with more taste. Additionally, smaller farmers are more likely to pay their workers a living wage than huge factory farms.

Avoid Monocrop Farming

Smaller farmers are less likely to use monocropping. Planting a single crop over and over again in the same space harms the soil, requires more pesticides, and adds harmful runoff of chemicals to local water supplies.

Accessibility

Farmers markets increase access to fresh, high quality food in lower income communities. Since farmers who sell at the markets typically travel around to different locations in the surrounding area of their farms, they can provide better, healthier food choices for communities that do not have access to them.

Reduced Plastic Waste

Farmers market products are not typically wrapped in plastic, or pre-cut and packaged, as in grocery stores. This reduces plastic waste.

Almost 30 years ago, Pam and Donna met for tea and discussed why the twin group was not sufficient to meet their needs. Essentially, they discovered that mothers of high multiples had little time to do things, found it difficult to maintain relationships, and could not even make it out of their homes. Eventually, they decided that other mothers of multiples would benefit from the same type of friendship and support connection that they found in each other. They founded KPMM organization to meet the needs of parents of multiples. Their main goal was to form a network of families to offer support in coping with the challenges that come with parenting multiples. At KPMM parents find support and needed supplies.
