Welcome, Father Rufus Van Horn!
A note from Father Rufus
It is good to officially be here at St John’s! I even have a key now. Thanks to all who contributed to the massive basket of goodies, cards, and gifts that greeted me on my first morning in the office! I’m looking forward to working through those. So many of you have already made me and my little dog Daisy feel quite welcome as I settled into my apartment near the church. I’ll be popping into many of the activities here at St John’s to meet you and to get to know your stories. I’m looking forward to seeing you all this Sunday at worship and at Rally Day! Thanks again for the warm welcome to St John’s.
Christ’s Peace,
Father Rufus

Common Ground Community Garden
These natives, American Beautyberry and Obedient Plants, are giving us September color in the NE corner of the garden. Both, believe it or not, are in the mint family.
The Obedients don't live up to their name as far as staying put in the ground! If they are in a happy place, they will spread to the point of being invaders. They are easily controlled, though, and have high-value nectar, so they are great for attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. They get their name from their trait of the flower stem staying in place for a while once it has been bent until it gradually moves back toward the sun, hours or even days later.
There is a lot to be said about the usefulness of the American Beautyberry. From food for wildlife to insect repellent and jams for humans! Here is one of many articles on this great bush.
