In 1964, during a visit to St. Augustine, Florida, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. took part in a rally that was a key moment in the region’s civil rights struggle. As he exited the event, a young girl approached him and, without hesitation, asked for his straw hat—his shield from the scorching Florida sun. Dr. King paused, smiled warmly, and handed it to her, a gesture that spoke volumes amid racial and political tension.
This small, seemingly inconsequential act of kindness left an indelible mark on those who witnessed it, reinforcing the values that defined Dr. King’s legacy: love, dignity, and generosity. Even in the most trying circumstances, he made space for moments of humanity.
On another occasion during a march, a young boy approached and asked Dr. King, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The question, innocent yet profound, caught King off guard. With a laugh, he replied, “I want to be a good man.” In that brief exchange, King reflected on a notion that would come to define his legacy: that integrity matters more than accolades.
Today, more than half a century later, Dr. King’s influence on youth endures.
This Monday (January 20, 2025), Music Haven and St. Luke's Steel Band come together for our highly anticipated MLK Celebration Concert, where we honor King’s enduring legacy. The concert will showcase the talent, drive, and hope of today’s young people, who through their music, reflect Dr. King’s vision—a world where every child’s voice has the power to effect meaningful change.
