Celebration of Life

On Sunday, March 8th at 2:00 p.m., family and friends will gather at CHPC to celebrate the life of Jack Leake. Jack passed on February 13, 2026. He was the son of Jean and John Leake and was a long-time member of CHPC. He was married to Julie for 53 years. She also passed recently.

For several years, Jack served as Treasurer of CHPC. Although he was afflicted with an ailment that limited his mobility, that did not diminish his service to the church and community. Jack is survived by his daughters: Jan, Beth. and Kim, as well as several grandchildren.

Condolences can be sent to:

Mark Your Calendar: Craig Kaviar's "Healing the Earth" Sculpture at CHPC
Tuesday, March 3, at 4 p.m. is the next installation step for the "Healing the Earth" sculpture by Craig Kaviar on CHPC's plaza. A crane will lift the 6-foot metal sculpture into place on the platform already installed. Feel free to come and watch from a distance.
Sunday, March 22nd at 2 p.m. is the official dedication of the sculpture. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors. There will be a reception in Henry Young Hall in the back building following the dedication. We hope to have media coverage. Information will be available about CHPC’s mission, activities, and other organizations associated with us,
That morning, at 11 a.m., worship that day will be a Contemplative Service of Healing and Hope led by Spirit of Sophia and CHPC. After worship, you may want to stay and help to set up for the dedication. Or you can return to the church for the 2 p.m. dedication.

Renowned local blacksmith/sculptor Craig A. Kaviar created the art piece from parts of guns chopped up at safe-disposal events sponsored by Guns to Gardens Louisville and metal tools donated by members of the congregation. The sculpture symbolizes the congregation’s commitment to promoting peace, justice, and sustainability.

Faith in Action with Palestine - Tuesday March 3

Join us to pray, plan and take action on behalf of the 57 Palestinian women prisoners in Damon Prison in Israel. We are joining the Friends of Palestinian Detainees of FOSNA in this postcard campaign demanding the release of all women prisoners. The conditions are horrific, revealing policies that are in violation of the Geneva Conventions and international human rights law.

March 3 - 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Overtures

We are pleased to share that Mid Kentucky Presbytery voted last Saturday, Feb. 21 to approve two overtures related to Israel and Palestine that its Church Administration Committee supported after our CHPC Session unanimously concurred on them on Jan. 28. These will now be presented at the PC(USA) 227th General Assembly to be held June 23-July 2 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Links to both overtures are provided below. The first overture approved was the Peace and Justice Through Just and Peaceful Means: Overture on Embargoing Israel. An embargo is an official ban on trade or other commercial activities with a particular country. This embargo asks US Congress and the President to enact a full trade embargo until particular conditions are met. These conditions include a withdraw of the Israeli army from the Palestinian territory, for apartheid policies to be abolished, for the walls that separate Palestinian from Israeli land to be destroyed, and for all Palestinian refugees to have the right to return to their homeland without harm. Peace and Justice Through Embargoing Overture CAC edit 2-07-26.docx

The second overture was already supported and presented by the Presbytery of the Redwoods. This overture condemns the Israeli government for violating the United Nations Convention with the crime of Genocide.  It encourages individuals contact the legislators to put an end to the nation buying for Israel, to not just speak out about the atrocities, but to also encourage the cessation of purchases by products made in Israel. It encourages people to stand against all forms of racism and antisemitism and Islamophobia.

“Genocide” means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. Genocide Overture.docx

Please plan to attend Big Question Sunday -- Genocide and Our Biblical Response at CHPC on Sunday, March 15, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There also will be other chances at CHPC to learn about these overtures and situations in the Middle East. In addition, please see the articles on the Prayer Group for the Middle East, or Faith and Action in Palestine, an outgrowth of the prayer group.

How do we pray? How could I pray? How do I cultivate a more prayerful life?

During Lent on each Sunday morning (except Palm Sunday) at 9:30 am, we will gather to talk about prayer . . . and to pray. Phil Lloyd-Sidle will facilitate this time in which we share from our lives, look at different kinds of prayer, and devote some time to praying. Over the five weeks we look forward to a generative time together that hopefully will help us on our Lenten journeys and lives. Our next gathering is this Sunday, March 1, 2026, meeting in the Gathering Room. Coffee, tea, and light goodies will be provided. Open to all, of course!

Please come and join us for Fun and Games!

How would you like to spend Tuesday afternoons surrounded by a group of friends having a great time playing games and just enjoying life? We will host various game opportunities (Mahjong, Hand and Foot, Bunco). Or you can bring your own game to share. All are welcome!

Our next meet-up is Tuesday, March 3 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Prayer Group for the Middle East

Feel free to join us Thursdays on Zoom, in-person, or both. This group has enabled such support for one another as we all struggle to cope with the tragedies in the Middle East and the on and off cease fires and prisoner releases. The first Thursday of each month the group will meet in person. Please each out to Soni for locations.

We would be grateful to have others join us. Email Soni at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.

Did You Know?

What Presbyterians Believe...

from PC(USA) Book of Confessions:

There is both unity and diversity in the theological and ethical teachings of the various confessions in the book.

1. Unity Comparison of the individual confessions in the book with each other reveals an easily recognizable fundamental agreement among them: a. All the confessions in the book share the same convictions about Jesus Christ as the one truly human and truly divine Mediator, Lord, and Savior. b. All explicitly or implicitly confess the doctrine of the Trinity. c. All the specifically Reformed confessions acknowledge the unique authority of Scripture and agree on principles for the right interpretation of Scripture. d. All the Reformed confessions assume or articulate the conviction that the Holy Spirit is the source of all right interpretation of Scripture and true Christian faith and life. e. All the Reformed confessions have the same theology concerning the true preaching of the Word and right administration of the Sacraments. f. All the Reformed confessions emphasize God’s sovereign claim on both personal and corporate life, and thankful human obedience to it. (All the catechisms contain expositions of the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer.) g. With the exception of the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds, comparison of any of these confessions with the confessional literature of other Christian traditions clearly reveals the same distinctively Reformed understanding of Christian faith and life.
