- The S&P 500 was up 6.2% in January. Since World War 2, when January has been an up month for the S&P 500 the index has averaged a further gain of 10.2% from February until the end of the year. When January has been a down month the S&P 500 has averaged a gain of just 2.1% for the remainder of the year.
- Retiring 3 years before the age of 65 more than doubles the chances of not being able to meet retirement income needs. By working part-time for as little as 10 hours per week for 5 years after turning 65, retirees cut the chances of not having enough retirement income by more than half from 12% down to 5%.
- Since 1950 the average annual gain for stocks has been 9.1%, and the market was higher 73% of the time. Inflation greatly affects performance, with stocks having been higher 77% of the time during years when inflation was down. Additionally, 9 of the 12 worst years happened when inflation was on the rise.
- Over the past 5 years, investors added an estimated $64.6 billion to funds using ESG strategies to invest in U.S. stocks. ESG funds have 22.1% of their assets in technology but only 2.6% in energy. Last year ESG funds lost 19.7%, faring even worse than conventional funds, which fell 18.1%.
