In the business of 2nd Chances...
Jeff Henderson from Food Network's "The Chef Jeff Project" gave a powerful keynote address at this year's Indianapolis Urban League's annual Equal Opportunity Day luncheon. Chef Jeff shared his emotional journey from drug dealing to prison and explained his transformation to become an award-winning celebrity chef and best selling author. UNITE INDY will be providing a key tool to ex-offenders looking for job opportunities as we work with others to take obstacles out of the way of successful reentry into our local communities. There are more stories like Chef Jeff's to be written and a human life to consider in every case. Lots to do, but we're on it!

Citizen 7 puts the focus on restorative justice. Who are these good guys?
C
itizen 7 Indy is a group of men of all ages, socioeconomic status, race, ethnic backgrounds, and political persuasions who who gather to help Indianapolis become a great city. This month an expert panel presented their thoughts on the subject of Restorative Justice which is more about
repairing the harm created by an offense (injury to victim, community, and offenders), which encourages active involvement of all parties to resolve the conflict,
rather than just viewing a crime in legalistic terms.
IMPD’s Lieutenant Kendale Adams (pictured) closed the program by encouraging everyone to sign up to get involved with their IMPD Community Resource District Council to help reduce violent crime in our city. Thanks to the Citizen 7 Leadership Team, Don Palmer, Greg Enas, Trent Cowles, Jackson Troxel, and Pete Watson. For more information on Citizen 7,

It's raining doughnuts to celebrate Salvation Army's history.
The Salvation Army established the first National Donut Day in 1938 to celebrate its work during World War I, when Salvation Army “Donut Lassies” served doughnuts to soldiers. Today, they deliver the sweet treat on National Donut Day to those in need and to doughnut lovers across the country. They even brought a box to UNITE INDY's world headquarters at 241 W. 38th street--a reminder for us of all the good this organization does throughout our city and our country. Thank you!

UNITE INDY's partner of the month, Lambswear, Inc. provides clothes for kids.
Heidi Taylor and Katie Caplinger began collecting gently used children's clothing and providing them to foster children back in 2012 as a project at Outlook Christian Church, but the women soon realized that there were many more children they could serve. Lambswear, Inc. was born. Today, the folks at Lambswear provide clothing to all kinds of children and you can help! The organization is always in need of clean usable clothing as well as volunteers! Disclaimer: Nancy's blog this month is personal and just for fun...Jim shaved off his
beard.
Yea!
For the past two years I have been living with someone (Nancy's husband & UNITE INDY co-founder, Jim) whose beard made him look a lot like Santa Claus. So I was quite surprised when Jim came home the other day with no beard. At first I didn’t notice. He actually said “you are
so
perceptive!” Which is of course married talk for “are you blind?” I am thrilled with the clean-shaven face I now see, but I have come to understand a little of why beards are so loved by the male species...
If you have a beard in your life, you will want to

Almost 1 out of every 3 children in Indianapolis lives below the poverty level, yet our economy is roaring, and unemployment is at a historic low. But all this good news stops at the lines surrounding many of our inner city neighborhoods. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment exceeds 20%. and poverty remains the overwhelming divider of people.
