December 2021
Congratulations, Kelly!
YVCHR's Volunteer of the Month
Kelly began volunteering with YVCHR in September after learning about the opportunity through a close friend. Since then, she has volunteered at a wide variety of projects, but her favorite thus far has been the No Kid Sleeps on the Floor bed build project with Sleep in Heavenly Peace. She thought it "was an amazing environment...a great learning experience, and it was nice to experience something new." Knowing that her time and efforts have been used to help others is why she loves volunteering. Her advice to new youth volunteers is to not "...stress too much about your first project because everyone is very welcoming and kind. They always provide a great environment to work in." And we are so happy she feels that way!

After high school, Kelly plans to attend college and find a career that she enjoys. In the meantime, she enjoys painting, playing tennis, swimming and, most of all, sleeping.
Fun Fact: Kelly's favorite fruit is a persimmon.
School Club Spotlight:
York High School
The YVC Club at York High School has been in full swing since the start of the academic year! With over 30 members and club attendance averaging 20 students, they are an impressive force for good. To date, the group has made no-sew blankets for So All May Eat (S.A.M.E.), created encouraging cards for children who are in hospice care and living in homeless shelters (in partnership with Elf Patrol), crafted ornaments for residents at the Gardens at Warwick Forest, and developed an in-house teacher support program that allows teachers to request assistance with tasks--like organizing materials and running copies--to help ease their workload. The club hopes "to help teachers as much as possible by doing jobs in their classrooms on a weekly basis."

These students take pride in their school and enjoy the opportunity to make it even better through acts of service. York High believes that "students who serve are better community citizens."
#GivingTuesday is November 30th!
This holiday season, YOU can empower youth and provide the gift of service by making a tax-deductible donation to YVCHR!

Did you know that YVCHR provides FREE year-round programs that are open to all youth in Hampton Roads ages 11-18? We provide high-quality, meaningful service-learning experiences that are designed to teach life and career skills, build empathy, connect youth to a wider network of peers and increase self-confidence....all at no cost to families! Note: The only exception is our Summer of Service camp, which is highly subsidized through grants.

Every donation allows us to reach more youth, who in turn, make a greater impact on our community!
Interested in making a legacy gift? Contact Katie to learn about contributing to our endowed fund.

Did you know that your holiday shopping can help fund YVCHR programs? Consider designating Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads as your charity of choice!

  • AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases on Amazon to YVCHR.
  • Simply shop at smile.amazon.com. The donation will be made at no extra cost to you.
  • Though 0.5% is not a large donation and it isn't intended to replace your regular charitable contributions, AmazonSmile is still a great way to maximize your impact! It all adds up!

Juniors and Seniors may apply from November 1, 2021 to January 28, 2022.
Community Knights Bingo
High school students and adults who would like to help local schools and nonprofit organizations (like YVCHR!), please consider signing up to volunteer at Community Knights Bingo. Proceeds from bingo are donated back into the Hampton Roads community!

NOTE: Community Knights will sign volunteer logs for those who need evidence of service hours.
This is not a YVCHR-facilitated activity, so a team leader from YVCHR will not be on-site.
