Cranbrook Tennis Classic Debuts One-of-a-Kind, Handcrafted Trophies in Collaboration with Cranbrook Academy of Art

The tournament commissioned Ian McDonald, Cranbrook Academy of Art’s globally renowned Artist-in-Residence and Head of Ceramics, to design this year’s trophies. His concept reimagines the tennis racket as a deconstructed form, weaving in architectural details from Cranbrook’s world-famous campus to fuse sport and design into a single object.

To forge the pieces, McDonald teamed up with Smith Shop, a Detroit blacksmithing studio founded by Amy Weiks, a Cranbrook Academy of Art alumna (MFA, Metalsmithing 2012), and partner Gabriel Craig. The trophies were hand-cast in their furnaces, a distinctly Cranbrook and distinctly Detroit collaboration.

It’s a fitting symbol for a tournament staged on a campus celebrated worldwide for its art and architecture.
