Cleveland Metroparks Forests, through the Seasons

Plant to Last

On March 4th, we were joined by Vegetation Management Coordinator, Sarah Eyesenbach for the last lecture in our WVP Natural Resources Winter Lecture Series: "Conservation Value Trees". It gave us a window into how the Cleveland Metroparks is implementing its forest management strategies throughout the Park District. With a focus on how forest composition has changed over time, we hope to anticipate how it may evolve in the future. Whether that means finding ways to cope with pests and disease for specific species or overarching problems like climate change, the work that is being done will allow us to develop diverse and structured woodlands.

The cultivation of native or climate tolerant trees has significant positive environmental effects. The benefits to the physical environment range from the forest floor all the way to the sky: from mitigating soil erosion and reducing flood impact to improving air quality by filtering pollutants and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They also restore and enhance the habitat for local pollinators and wildlife.

We can contribute to responsible ecosystem management on a smaller scale when planning plantings at home by choosing our plants wisely. When we plant the right tree in the right situation, it can have an impact that lasts. The Metropark's new tree selector tool can help you get started.

Warm regards,

Sara Corrigan

WVP Coordinator

Plastic-Eating Mushrooms: They're Real!!

It all started with this particular mushroom pictured here -- Pestalotiopsis microspora. When Yale University students found it in the rainforests of Ecuador in 2011, they discovered the first fungus that not only has a voracious appetite for plastic but can also thrive in oxygen-starved environments like landfills. Since then, research has uncovered other species that can utilize plastic as a food source. The article directly above covers the subject in more detail, including the prospect of using this form of life to tackle plastic waste/pollution.
