Reconstruction of Cargo Dock 3 Begins

Demolition has begun on Cargo Dock 3 at the Port of Brownsville, kicking off a major reconstruction project to modernize the nearly 90-year-old facility. The upgraded dock will handle larger vessels and boost the port’s efficiency and capacity, supporting continued growth in international maritime trade.

The Port of Brownsville has begun the demolition phase of the Cargo Dock 3 reconstruction project, marking the start of a major modernization effort for the port’s turning basin.

Originally constructed in the 1940s, Cargo Dock 3 served the port for nearly 90 years handling a wide range of cargo. Located on Windhaus Road on the west side of the turning basin, Cargo Dock 3’s reconstruction will update the facility to meet today’s safety and operational standards while accommodating larger vessels following the deepening of the Brownsville Ship Channel to 52 feet.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ latest report, the Port of Brownsville handled over 11.2 million tons of waterborne cargo in 2023—a 23% increase from the previous year—advancing its national ranking from 50th to 41st out of 150 maritime ports, its highest position ever and a testament to its growing role in international maritime trade.

The $40 million project is funded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Maritime Division (TxDOT) and the Brownsville Navigation District (BND) with the navigation district securing an $11.5 million Maritime Infrastructure Program grant in 2023.

NextDecade Announces Positive FID on Train 5
at Rio Grande LNG

NextDecade Corporation announced Oct. 16, that it has made a positive final investment decision (FID) on Train 5 at Rio Grande LNG, closed financial transactions to fully fund Train 5 and related infrastructure, and issued full notice to proceed to Bechtel Energy Inc. for Train 5.

"Today, we are excited to announce that we have made a positive FID on Train 5, marking the second FID for NextDecade in just over a month," said Matt Schatzman, NextDecade’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

"This achievement is the result of tireless effort by our team and our partners, and I would like to thank the entire NextDecade team, our equity partners, our Train 5 LNG customers, Bechtel, our financing partners, and our local stakeholders for helping bring Train 5 FID to fruition."
