Spring Crime Prevention Tips

As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, it’s an ideal time to review some helpful crime prevention tips to protect your home and property. By staying proactive, residents can make their homes less attractive to criminals.

Solicitors in the Neighborhood

With warmer weather, door-to-door soliciting becomes more common. Please remember that all solicitors must carry a valid Village permit. They are prohibited from approaching homes displaying a "No Solicitors" sign—even if they have a permit. If you need a sign, complimentary stickers are available at the Inverness Police Station or Village Hall. Should a solicitor refuse to leave or becomes aggressive, don’t hesitate to contact 911. We also encourage residents to use caution when interacting with unfamiliar individuals at the door.

Package Theft Awareness

"Porch pirates" are known to follow delivery routes, looking for unattended packages. Consider coordinating with neighbors, family, or friends to retrieve packages promptly. A porch bin or container can also help conceal deliveries. Many carriers now offer delivery alerts or alternate options to assist with secure receipt of packages.

Lighting and Surveillance

Proper outdoor lighting and camera systems—including doorbell cameras—are effective crime deterrents. Bright lighting reduces hiding spots and increases visibility for both residents and neighbors.

Vacation House Watch Program

Planning time away from home? Take advantage of the Inverness Police Department’s Vacation House Watch Program. Officers will periodically check on your residence and alert you to any concerns. This service is available not only for vacations but also for unoccupied homes, such as those for sale. To sign up, call the Police Department at 847-358-7766 or www.inverness-il.gov/vacation.

See Something, Say Something

  • If you notice suspicious activity, call 911—this number dispatches all police responses, not just emergencies. Timely reporting allows officers to intervene while the situation is unfolding.
  • Adopt a Nightly Safety Routine
  • Help secure your home each night with these simple steps:
  • Close your garage door
  • Lock all vehicles
  • Bring car keys/fobs indoors
  • Retrieve mail, packages, and newspapers
  • Lock exterior doors
  • Turn on outdoor lights

Overnight Patrols and Crime Opportunity Alert Card

Inverness Police patrol the community 24/7. During overnight shifts, officers may drive slowly with lights on to look for potential "crime opportunities"—such as open garage doors or unattended packages. If an officer observes something that could pose a risk, they will leave a Crime Opportunity Alert as a courtesy reminder. These cards are not citations, but simply tools to promote safety awareness.

By working together, we can help ensure a safe and secure season for everyone in Inverness. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the Police Department at (847) 358-7766.

Inverness to Celebrate Arbor Day with Tree Planting

and Student Art Contest

The Village of Inverness will celebrate Arbor Day on Monday, May 12, 2025, with a tree-planting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 1400 Baldwin Road. The event will include refreshments and giveaways. In conjunction with the celebration, the Inverness Tree Commission is hosting a student art contest for the best original drawing to feature on the Arbor Day program cover. The winner will receive a plaque. Entries are due by May 1. For more details, please visit the Village's official website at https://www.inverness-il.gov/2025-arborday.

2025 Inverness 50/50 Tree Planting Program

The Village of Inverness is offering the 2025 50/50 Tree Planting Program, designed to help residents enhance their front yards with a beautiful new tree. This initiative allows homeowners to share the cost of planting a tree with the Village, making it more affordable to contribute to the community's green spaces.

Residents can choose from four tree species: Frontier Elm, Redmond Linden, Sugar Maple, and Swamp White Oak. The program covers the cost of the tree, planting, and a tree water bag for $250.

This program is a wonderful opportunity for Inverness residents to beautify their properties while contributing to the community's environmental health. The deadline to apply for the program is April 30, 2025.
