A Mass for Troubled Times
Sunday, March 23 at 3 p.m.
|
F.J. Haydn’s
Missa in Angustiis
in D minor
, or as it is more commonly known, the
Lord Nelson Mass
, is recognized by many musical historians to be Haydn’s greatest composition.
Missa in Angustiis
translates as “Mass for Troubled Times,” and that certainly fits what was happening in the world when Haydn wrote this masterpiece in 1798. It was a time of great concern for Europeans as they watched Napoleon rise in power. It was also then that the British Lord Horatio Nelson defeated Napoleon’s fleet in the Battle of the Nile. Although Napoleon was not stopped by this defeat, Haydn was impressed enough with the victory that he renamed his work the Lord Nelson Mass.

A Letter from Founder and Artistic Director
Michael O'Neal
One of the things I enjoy most about our MOS concerts is the wide range of literature we perform. I know it provides interest and enjoyment for our singers, and the comments I hear from concert goers suggest you feel the same way. The last three concerts of our 2019-2020 Season will certainly provide a great variety of programming, and I hope you’ll be able to attend them all!
This Sunday, February 23, our Kaleidoscope ensemble, 36 singers selected from the larger MOS chorus, will present
A Musical Smorgasbord
. This program will take a look (largely humorous) at the subject of food and drink, and as in all Kaleidoscope concerts, there will be plenty of variety. We’ll have songs ranging from
Be Our Guest
from
“Beauty and the Beast”
to a lovely setting of the text,
If Music Be the Food of Love
. In fact, in keeping with our theme, we’ll even have refreshments following the concert!
A very different program will be presented on Sunday, March 22. For years I have wanted to conduct F.J. Haydn’s
Missa in Angustiis
in D minor, or as it is more commonly known, the
Lord Nelson Mass
.
Considered by some music historians to be Haydn’s greatest composition, this piece features superb choral writing, virtuosic vocal solos, and an orchestra of strings, three trumpets, timpani, and organ. The concert will open with two exquisite musical examples, both of which are audience favorites: Mozart’s
Ave Verum Corpus
and Barber’s
Adagio for Strings
.
The season ends with a concert on Friday, May 8, entitled
Soft Rockin’ with MOS
. It’s exactly what the title suggests and you can expect to hear popular “soft rock” songs from the '70s and '80s that have easily remembered melodies, lush harmonies, and understandable lyrics. Now that’s something that can’t always be said about today’s music! Here are just a few of the songs we’ll be singing:
Love Will Keep Us Together; Have I Told You Lately; Three Times a Lady; and Sweet Caroline
. Dig out some '70s and '80s threads from the back of your closet (or your attic) and join us for a fun evening of reminiscing!
As you can see, MOS tries to offer something for everyone. We hope you’ll join us in our music making!
Warmly,
Michael
