A woman looking off in the distance

Sermon Scriptures:

Nahum 3:1-7

Woe, city of bloodshed, utterly deceitful, full of plunder— no end to the prey! 2 The crack of whip and rumble of wheel, galloping horse and bounding chariot! 3 Horsemen charging, flashing sword and glittering spear, piles of dead, heaps of corpses, dead bodies without end— they stumble over the bodies! 4 Because of the countless debaucheries of the prostitute, gracefully alluring, mistress of sorcery, who enslaves[a] nations through her debaucheries and peoples through her sorcery, 5 I am against you, says the Lord of hosts, and will lift up your skirts over your face,

and I will let nations look on your nakedness and kingdoms on your shame.

6 I will throw filth at you and treat you with contempt and make you a spectacle. 7 Then all who see you will shrink from you and say, “Nineveh is devastated; who will bemoan her?” Where shall I seek comforters for you?

2 Kings 18:9-12

In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of King Hoshea son of Elah of Israel, King Shalmaneser of Assyria came up against Samaria, besieged it, 10 and at the end of three years took it. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of King Hoshea of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11 The king of Assyria carried the Israelites away to Assyria and settled them in Halah, on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, 12 because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God but transgressed his covenant—all that Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded; they neither listened nor obeyed.

We're midway through a short week (for those who had Presidents Day off), and yet the weekend still feels like it's taking its sweet time. Here in the church office, we're counting down the days to Sunday which will be the start of our new sermon series on reluctant mercy! Which is what you give the barista when they put almond instead oat milk in your latte.

Along with the new sermon series, here's what else you need to know:

It's not too late

We're still accepting reflection & prayer writing submissions for the Lent devotional series that begins today and runs through Easter (April 5). This series will complement our Jonah sermon series on forgiveness.

This is not about writing something perfect. It's about offering a faithful reflection that will help our church pray and contemplate together during Lent.

If you'd like more information, or are interested in signing up, email office@stmarkumc.org to get started!

New Sermon Series

Reluctant Mercy: A Journey with Jonah

Reluctant mercy sermon cover

This Lent, Saint Mark is walking together through the story of Jonah and a shared journey toward forgiveness. Reluctant Mercy explores the honest terrain of faith: hurt, resistance, repentance, mercy, and new life. This series invites us to reflect on scripture, name what we carry, and discover how God meets us in the places we would rather avoid.

Let this be a season where we discover that God’s grace is wider than our fear, deeper than our pain, and always leading us home.
