Recently, I learned of the term FOMU—the fear of messing up. BAM! That one hit me right in the heart.

When I hit the “send” button on a client’s tax return that we prepared, my heart clenches. My inner voice rattles off: Did we include everything? Can I explain what happened? Is it 100% correct? Did we miss anything? I experience the fear of messing up every single time.

In March, we had 3 feet of snow. The city was shut down for two days. At the same time, a 320,000 sq. ft. warehouse in our neighborhood caught fire in the middle of the snowstorm. Firefighters struggled for days with the snow and wind to put out the fire.

Summary: Using the metaphor of a river, the author explores ways to improve operations. He presents a process to help visualize how to identify obstructions, utilize resources, recognize droughts and overflows, and navigate opportunities to increase profits.

My Recommendation: I personally know and admire the author. He has direct experience in consulting and software, working exclusively with manufacturers. He truly knows what he’s talking about, with deep, hands-on experience across many organizations over 25 years.

The river metaphor can also apply to other types of businesses. We all have revenue streams, people, and processes.
