Sign Up for Alerts! Recent Changes to Nixle Alerts and Advisories
Nixle and the County Community Warning System (CWS) are two methods that the Lafayette Police Department uses to provide you with timely information, advisories and emergency alerts. You are strongly encouraged to sign up for both alerts, as this gives us the best chance to reach you in a disaster situation.
Recently, Nixle changed to an app-based program by Everbridge. Also, due to the recent significant increase in the cost to send out text messages, we will now only use the SMS Text option for significant road closures and emergencies, and in instances where a large portion of the community is affected. All other advisories and community information will be sent via the Everbridge App and email.
Here’s how-to sign-up for the Everbridge App: Visit www.nixle.com, text your zip code to 888777 Or, download the Everbridge App from your phone’s App store. Once you have the app on your smartphone, follow the instructions. If you are on a desktop, from www.Everbridge.com, you can click on the blue “Residents sign-up and login” button to access your existing Nixle account or create a new account.
Here’s how-to sign-up for Community Warning System (CWS): You can sign up to receive CWS messages via a phone call and/or text message in English or Spanish at www.cwsalerts.com. CWS can be used to send a message citywide, or to geo-target specific areas/neighborhoods, for example in the case of an emergency evacuation in just one part of town. The Lafayette Police Department may use the County’s Community Warning System in extreme emergencies, so you are encouraged to sign up for CWS in addition to Nixle alerts on the Everbridge App. Note that CWS messages are only sent in extreme emergency situations.
