Earlier this week, "Giving Tuesday" saw the inter-webs teeming with posts extolling people’s favorite charities and non-profits. Sharing time, talent, and monetary contributions is common this time of year - which is wonderful, given the immensity of human need in our world.
However, giving of ourselves isn’t merely a seasonal affair. It is how we follow the One who became human, Jesus, who shared with us the priceless gift of incarnate love. Have you slowed down lately to be fully present with another (including yourself)? How did that gift of presence draw you beyond familiar circles?
In the spirit of #GivingTuesday, I invite each of us to try stepping out of our comfort zones. Here are a few opportunities:
- Maybe your culinary prowess wants a place to show off—consider making a meal together with our young adults and enjoying it with the men of Covenant Community in the coming month. (Stayed tuned for details!)
- Perhaps you prefer to be among those who will deliver poinsettias to homebound members of our church on Sunday, December 22, after our morning worship services. Email Ellen Porter at sep66@comcast.net to sign up.
- If your holiday sparkle loves a party, why not help host our holiday gathering for refugee children at Leapin’ Lizards on December 14? (Scroll down for details).
- Worrying about those who are cold this winter? Come help families who come to Threads to be outfitted with warm winter gear! Volunteer to shop with kids between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on a Saturday. Email Lori Guarisco at threads@allsaintsatlanta.org to sign up.
- Maybe you yourself are craving stillness, amid a busy season…our Advent Quiet Night on Tuesday, December 10 at 7:30 p.m. is the perfect place to be still and know God’s love in a new way.
The best gift we can offer ourselves and others, at this and at any time of the year, is the act of tending that precious light of Christ inside each of us. How will you let your light be nourished this Advent?
