Engineering Biology Initiative Inaugural Symposium
The Engineering Biology Initiative (EBi), formerly Health Innovations Via Engineering (HIVE), will hold its Inaugural Symposium on November 19th to bring together the engineering biology community for a morning of research, innovation, and connection. The program will feature a keynote by Dr. Dawn Beraud (AIMBE Executive Director), UCSF Resource Allocation Program (RAP) awardee project presentations highlighting EBi-supported research, fast-paced lightning talks, and an interactive poster session and networking to showcase emerging work across the community. Register to attend.
CALLING ALL ABSTRACTS!
Abstract Deadline: October 26 at 5:00 PM
Whether you have new research to share or a poster from a recent scientific meeting, we invite postdocs and trainees to participate in our poster session and connect with faculty, peers, and researchers from across the engineering biology community.
Submit Your Research
Submit an abstract of 500 words or fewer. Figure captions and citations are excluded from the word count. Up to three optional figures may be included. Submit your abstract - https://tiny.ucsf.edu/EBi2026
Already Have a Poster? Bring It!
No need to start from scratch! Abstracts and posters presented at another scientific meeting within the past six months may be reused for this EBi Symposium. Have a poster that was presented before May 2026? Please contact us [insert my email] for approval prior to submission.
Get Your Research Noticed
Share your discoveries and increase the visibility of your work with UCSF faculty, peers, and researchers from across disciplines while making new connections within the engineering biology community.
Compete for Poster Prizes
Outstanding posters will be recognized with prizes in five categories.
We welcome submissions from postdocs and other trainees whose research intersects with engineering, biology, technology, and human health.

Linear Mixed Effects Model Using R
More often than not, biological experiments involve repeated measures. Examples include responses measured in cellular assays, where the repeated measures may occur over multiple experimental batches, multiple plates, or multiple wells within a plate. Observations of mouse behavior over consecutive trials would be another example of experiments involving repeated measures. The distinctions between biological and technical replicates become less clear in these scenarios. Standard statistical tests like t-tests and ANOVA are not applicable. Instead, analysis of such data requires more sophisticated approaches, such as linear mixed effects modeling. In this course, you’ll learn the motivation for the use of these models, the underlying description and assumptions behind them, example scenarios where they can be used, and code to implement and interpret these models in R.

Recognizing the need for collaboration of MSK scientists with experts outside of the MSK field, we are providing support to MSK Center members to host a meal for a creative and enjoyable in-person networking meeting to stimulate these interactions and to further develop new research ideas and plans to fund them. Faculty, staff, and trainees who are MSKC/CCMBM members are encouraged to apply to host an event.
If you are not a member, you may concurrently apply for membership while your Open MIKE application is being reviewed.
