Happy Spring Everyone!

The warm and beautiful spring weather is here. All of the exciting adventures that spring brings to our matches makes it such an exciting time of the year. I hope that you will stop and take time from the hustle and bustle to enjoy lots of long walks, hikes and outdoor adventures.

Spring is always a reminder for me to slow down and embrace the joy that comes from watching things blossom and grow all around me. Speaking of blossom, our Community Based and Site Based Programs are growing and experiencing the joy that comes from planning fun adventures full of learning and discovery.

Our volunteer mentors have such a special role in helping the young people we serve to navigate through the difficult times in their lives by encouraging them to triumph through adversity and not give up. Just like the humble caterpillar who pushes through all of the stages to become a beautiful butterfly.

Thank you so much for your service. Enjoy all of your spring time adventures!

Yours in Youth Service,

Donna Dunlap

MEET COOPER AND JAHEEM

What do you enjoy most about being a Big?
I've had such a great time with Jaheem! He has a funny and energetic personality, that’s made it so fun to hang out with him. He’s always so excited when we get to meet, and enthusiastic about whatever we’re doing. We met over the Summer at Freedom School. I was super lucky to get paired with him, and it’s been really fun to get to know him better!

What is your favorite activity to do with your Little (Jaheem)?
My favorite thing to do with Jaheem is definitely having dinosaur drawing competitions! This activity allows him to show off his artistic talent! He’s also had a lot of fun learning how to play battleship (he’s still working on understanding the idea of coordinates), but we’ve had some great games regardless.

What does MENTORING mean to you?
I feel like I’ve learned just as much from mentoring Jaheem, as he has from me, if not more. I’ve learned a lot about working with kids, and have had a lot of fun in the process. BBBS has been a really fun break from the routine of the school week. I really just hope to be close friend to Jaheem, as well as a mentor, and hopefully teach him a few things along the way.

Thank you Cooper for being an awesome Big to your Little!

LET'S BUILD AND DESIGN TOGETHER!
We have a great opportunity for you and your Little to learn about careers in architecture and design! The American Institute of Architects, Charlotte will present a mini-course on careers in architecture. Matches will also get to design and build a ā€œskyscraperā€.

HIGH SCHOOL BIGS EMPOWER OUR YOUTH FOR #COLLEGEWEEK

Our Mecklenburg and Cabarrus County High School Bigs programs had a jam-packed February! Our Bigs and Littles explored iconic moments and pioneers for Black History Month, and discovered all the amazing colleges and universities in North Carolina for College Week. This annual tradition at Rama Road Elementary is a BIG moment that we will always remember!

This is what #EmpoweringPotential looks like!
