Season Of:

Pentecost

Issue Of: June 1, 2024

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it."

All types of cars or trucks can be used to join us on this fun outing, and invite your friends to come, too!

Line up in the back section of Lord of Life’s parking lot at 10:45 AM for a 45 minute drive through the picturesque pinelands.

Bill Reich will hand out directions and lead in his yellow car.

Scholarship Recipients Announced!

Thanks to the NJ Synod for a grant given to Lord of Life and to Church Council for deciding to what new ministry the money should go. Lord of Life was able to establish a scholarship fund for our college students. We had 7 students apply for the scholarship in its inaugural year. All the students had to fill out an application form, write a faith statement which included their involvement in our church, and a personal statement. The application packets were given to the Scholarship Committee members with the applicants’ names crossed out. Each Committee Member read through all the packets and then voted on two students to receive the scholarship. It was a very difficult decision because each student's credentials were excellent.

We are happy to announce that the two students chosen are: Lyndsey Millere, who attends Alvernia University, in Reading PA, and Michael Safier, who attends Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Lyndsey and Michael will each be given a $1,000 check on July 21st at the 9:30 service. Congratulations!

Our scholarship will be available to qualifying students again next year. All students may apply each year in which they are in school. Applications will be due prior to May 1, 2025. To learn more about our scholarship and to print an application form, click on the link below.

What Is The Pattern Of Worship?

If, for some unexplained reason, the words were to disappear from all the road signs in the United States, certain signs would still be able to communicate their meaning. Even without words, the triangle of a yield sign or the octagon of the stop sign would still get the desired results. The shape itself, especially when coupled with the traditional color, is capable of powerful communication

Our hymnal (Evangelical Lutheran Worship) outlines a basic pattern for Christian worship:

Gathering

Word

Meal

Sending

Lutherans share this pattern of worship with many other Christians, as it has come to us from the earliest gatherings of the Church.

This pattern is a gift to the church, best to be understood as one flowing action rather than a “to-do” list. The pattern is one of flowing, communal action. Our Christian worship practices evolved over generations, yet the basic pattern of Gathering, Word, Meal, and Sending continues to serve the church’s mission.

Another way to think about the pattern of worship is to compare it to grammar. Even if you do not know a particular language and the words themselves are unfamiliar, it is often possible to catch the gist of a conversation because of the way the words are used. The pattern of worship--with its basic texts and actions--is like grammar. The "vocabulary" of specific music, ceremonies, and styles can differ vastly from place to place and time to time. The grammar —the historic pattern of worship—is the framework that holds all the variety together and helps bridge the communication gap from church to church, language to language, and culture to culture.

As stated, the pattern for worship can vary from place to place, but it is basically the same, and there is room in this pattern for freedom and flexibility. If you are interested in the order or structure of worship that we use at Lord of Life, please open to the front of the Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal to find out more. You may also contact Rick Krause who will be able to answer your questions.

Plastic Bag Recycling Now Available At Lord Of Life

Next time you are in Fellowship Hall, look for a large white mesh bag that is hanging on the gray folding screening near the back outside doors. Above the bag, you will see the sign pictured here. It explains what types of plastic bags, wrap, and film can be deposited into the mesh bag for recyling. These are some of the materials that cannot be placed in your curbside recyling containers. Our church is now providing a way for you to recyle these plastic materials.

A photo of the mesh bag is below. Click on the link to see a better picture of what types of plastic materials can be placed into the mesh bag.

Helping Hands Ministry

Wednesday, June 26th,

At 9:00 AM

(Sandwiches For The Christian Caring Center)

Helping Hands is a monthly ministry to make sandwiches for the homeless served by Christian Caring Center. It meets the last Wednesday of each month. We form an assembly line and make about 200 sandwiches in an hour. Jobs are easy – putting meat and cheese on a roll, placing sandwiches in a baggie, counting the sandwiches, and putting them in a grocery bag. Everyone gets a small, easy task and a lot gets done quickly while we share some time together. We keep everyone safe by wearing gloves and masks, spacing ourselves, and venting the room. All are invited to join us!

It would be good to know in advance how many people can help each time we meet to make sandwiches. Some months we have a lot of help, but others not enough. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the Narthex or contact Janell Reich.

MORE Athletic Shoe Collection

MORE stands for Modular Organic Regenerative Environments. The group is 100% funded by recycling athletic shoes, keeping them out of landfills. Donated shoes are sold to participating vendors in developing countries. Proceeds regenerate forests and jump start small farming co-ops in needy regions. This creates retail jobs while stimulating free enterprise. MORE provides basic supplies, tools, seeds (fruit-bearing mango, papaya, avocado and income producing mahogany), and agroforestry training to poor farming families, school children and rural villages.

You can contribute your used sneakers or athletic shoes by placing them in the collection box located in the church entryway. Please sneaker-type used footwear only, no dress or other shoes.

Join ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton for a conversation about God’s Love Made Real. This ELCA movement encourages us to create a world experiencing the difference God’s grace and love in Christ make for all people and creation.

June 13, 1:30 – 2:15 PM (Eastern Time)

Registration is encouraged, but not required.

This event will take place on Zoom. (Save this link.)

What can I expect?

Bishop Eaton will share why God’s Love Made Real is meaningful to her and the future of the church. The Rev. Patricia Davenport, bishop of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, will host the conversation, and participants will have a chance to ask questions and share stories.

Is this event for me?

This webinar is especially for people who care about the ELCA and live in New York, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania or the New England or Slovak Zion synods. If you don’t live in one of these, stay tuned for an upcoming event in your region.

Can I watch it later?

A recording may be available at some point in the future, but we encourage you to stream the event live on June 13 at 1:30 PM (Eastern Time).

What else do I need to know?

Learn more about God’s Love Made Real at lovemadereal.elca.org.

We look forward to sharing this time with you!

traditional IRA tax-free to charity each year. The "qualified charitable

distribution" will count as your required minimum distribution without being added to your adjusted gross income! One of our Lord of Life church members is already taking advantage of this. Read all about it in the links

Happy Father's Day!

Sunday June 16th

To all our Lord of Life dads, have a wonderful and blessed day!

LifeLines Ending Song:

Several Baptisms occurred during the months of April and May at Lord of Life. This hymn was always sung by the Editor's former congregation at the conclusion of the sacrament and is well known to many members of our church. This version is sung by the choir of ELCA's Concordia College. Remember, no matter what age we might be, we remain children of our heavenly Father.
