Dear Friends,
Each Wednesday morning the Church staff meets in the Council room (note: if you call between 9 & 10am on a Wednesday and get the answering machine, that's why!). We begin by reading and discussing one of the scripture passages for the coming Sunday, since we want all that we do to be grounded in God's Word and shaped by God's spirit. Then we name persons and situations to hold in prayer, including you.
After that most important stuff, we start looking through the calendar to refresh our awareness of what's happening in the life of Salisbury UCC, and especially what ministries and missions may need our attention. The summertime has slightly less activity than the other seasons - but today one of us made sure we were aware of some plans for December events. Which is to say, yours is a visionary Church staff!
It's a blessing to meet around a table with colleagues in ministry. It is a wonder to remember that the Church is just this: groups of Jesus-followers, gathering to tend to the many ministries that radiate out of the radical self-giving, nonviolent, unconditional grace of our Teacher. Not just the staff, and not just in the Church House, but all who lend their hearts to serving and celebrating as part of our covenant community.
I continue to give thanks for all these circles of caring, praying, studying, and doing that constitute the Congregational Church of Salisbury. Praise be!
Christlove,
Pastor John

This Sunday, soprano Christiane Olson is singing a lovely piece written by Gluck entitled
O Saviour Hear Me. Christoph Willibald (Ritter von) Gluck (1714-1787) was a German classical composer known for his blending of Italian and French opera styles in the early classical period. He is best known for his opera
Orfeo ed Euridice (1762).

Gratitude
Karin Noyes, for the Deacons
I have been hearing a lot lately about how the practice of keeping a gratitude journal is one of the new pillars of health. The idea is simple – each evening recognize and record in a journal, several things that were good in your life that day, even or maybe especially if it was only a small thing. This way of looking at the world forces the glass half full attitude into your consciousness and your actions. It lowers stress and contributes to your general well-being. We all have so much to be thankful for and it is good to acknowledge it. A better definition of gratitude follows:

This summer you may discover an abundance of fruit or cucumbers in your garden. If so, plan to make some jams, preserves, or pickles for the Fall Festival in October. These home-made items are very popular with visitors to the Country Kitchen during the week-end event. All proceeds from the Fall Festival at our church are given to the Board of Christian Action to donate to local organizations. It's a win-win for everyone!

Effective immediately, we are implementing a new security measure for the church staff: If any of the staff is in the building alone, then the Library Street door will remain locked.
If you stop by the church during office hours and the door is locked, please press the button to the left of the door to call the office. The staff person will then come down and open the door for you!
