Notes from the Pond
As the moon sets on August 2020 we want to thank everyone that visited this summer.
To everyone that might be visiting this off season we want to let you know we will continue for the foreseeable future to limit the number of customers at Duck's Cottage at any given time to six. At both stores, face masks covering mouth and nose will be required. We will continue to sanitize all frequently touched surfaces throughout the day. Our priority is the safety of our staff and everyone that walks through our doors during this unprecedented time in our lives. With each other’s help, patience and understanding we will get through this. Thank you.

Keep them reading.. keep them learning.
School has restarted in most places in whatever form it takes- remote learning, in- person instruction, hybrid formatting and even home schooling. Many libraries remain closed or open only for curbside pickup. With that in mind, I decided to focus on some new titles for our younger customers and remind parents and grandparents everywhere that through our affiliate page at Bookshop.org you can order practically anything your student needs or desires.
Katherine Applegate's The One and Only Ivan, has been a kid's favorite since it pubbed in 2012. It's the story of Ivan, a gorilla who has spent most of his life in a strip mall zoo. It sounds pretty sad but it is a truly feel good story kids love (and as of August can watch too as a streaming major motion picture). The One and Only Bob is the story about Ivan's canine friend, Bob, their elephant friend Ruby and the true meaning of friendship and family. A wonderful reunion awaits!
Parents everywhere are enjoying a major trip down memory lane as the BabySitter's Club experiences yet another return to pop culture (thanks to Netflix!) The BSC is available in graphic novel format, there's a new 'baby sisters' series for the younger set and the publisher has begun reissuing many of the original books. All the versions have been steady summer sellers this year once again proving there's nothing like the Baby Sitters to entertain the kids!
Teen readers will be mesmerized by Elizabeth Acevedo's new title- Clap When You Land. Written in verse (a style they love!) it toggles back and forth between two girls- on in New York, on in the Dominican- who both lose their father in a plane crash. Their father is the same man.. which eventually his daughters Camino and Yahaira discover. (this book reminds me of Anita Shreve's adult novel, The Pilot's Wife) Great concept and the prose format just carries the reader along..
Whether your kids are learning virtually or in person, here's a book that will help get the school year off to a great start! The latest Dog Man is here!!! Dav Pilkey's super popular series continues with Grime & Punishment!! Order it for the kid in your life today..
Be sure to check out our bookshop.org page for this year's NCSLMA Battle of the Books lists, upcoming school lists and many more titles for all the students in your house!

I am just crazy for Like Crazy, a late summer release that was SO worth waiting for. You'll fall in love with Dan Mathews (Senior VP at PETA) and his mom.. you'll want to hang out with them, their friends, neighbors, the entire hood. When Mathews' 78 year old mom, Perry, can't take care of herself anymore, he just moves her into his dilapidated Victorian home- and life- in Portsmouth, VA. What follows is a heart-warming and heart-wrenching, funny and tragic story of their relationship and her mental illness. It will make you smile, make you cry, it might even make you jump in the car and go see if you can find Dan at Baron's. Think: Jeanette Walls, eldercare and schizophrenia.
I really liked Janelle Brown's last book, Watch Me Disappear, and picked up her new thriller, Pretty Things, on the recommendation of a Downtown Books staffer. Yowza! This is an intricately woven spider web of deceit. Nina was raised by her con artist mother. Determined to go a different route, she graduates from college but life in NYC and a career in design don't work out so she ends up back in Cali, hooked up with her mother's Irish (or is he) partner in crime while caring for her mom who is dying of cancer (or is she). Together they target a lonesome heiress (hmm.. really?) in what they think will be the con of a lifetime. But will she trust them? Do they trust each other? Who can YOU trust? Every page keeps you guessing and trust me, you'll never see what's coming.
Think: Patricia Highsmith, plot twists, duplicity.
What I'm cooking: I can't wait to start having a weekly pasta night using the wonderful cookbook, Simple, Elegant Pasta Dinners. Organized by the four seasons, it makes the most of ingredients particular to each one. I'm not saying I'm going to MAKE the pasta, but if I wanted to it has lots of good recipes and directions on how to do so. I'm can't wait for a pretty plate of orechiette with carmelized brussel sprouts or spinach and avocado linguine.. the book has been popular, but while you wait for it to arrive check out Nikki Marie's blog- Chasing the Seasons for great dinner ideas, a monthly list of what's in season and more.
