RE-FORMING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD, WITH THE EARTH, & WITH EACH OTHER
Peace to you,

Holden Village has been bustling with wintertime fun this past month! Many people joyfully celebrated Christmas and New Years at Holden. The community hosted the Winter Olympics featuring Holden hilarity in competitions such as Synchronized Snow Ballet, the Carol-Off, and Skiing while Knitting.

Villagers welcomed in the New Year with a splash in the annual tradition of the Polar Plunge. While the polar bears were unable to travel to the usual plunge location at Lake Chelan, they braved the frigid waters of Railroad Creek instead!

Students from four universities and seminaries brought a lively energy to the community for January Term (“J-Term”). In addition to taking classes, the students volunteered around the Village, had Garbology shifts, shared their talents at Open Mic nights, took Cross Country Skiing lessons, and read Haiku poems at mealtimes.

We hope you enjoy these stories and images from the past month at Holden!

ANNOUNCING THE 2020 SUMMER CONVERSATION–ALL THINGS NEW
"I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." –Isaiah 43:19

There are many invitations afforded us in times such as these. They are bold and obvious invitations to listen, to engage, to be open, to love, and to remind ourselves that we don't own the answers. During the Summer Conversation in 2020, Holden's visiting faculty will focus on the concept of making All Things New. It is a conversation worth joining.

HOLDEN EVENING PRAYER AROUND THE WORLD (HEPAW)
Holden invites Villagers across the globe to come together through participation in Holden Evening Prayer on February 5, 2020. This vesper service was written in 1985-86 by Marty Haugen during a musical residency at Holden Village. Together, we seek to support and draw strength from one another, reaffirming our values as people who have been called, equipped, and sent, and supporting each other’s work in environmental stewardship and justice for all people.

Join us February 7-10, 2020 for a weekend of gathering around story. We know our stories are powerful and world-shaping. This Women’s Retreat we will talk about claiming our voice and entering into the practice of deep listening. We will journey together to reflect on our own paths and revisit them with new eyes. We look forward to your presence as we listen to our minds, bodies, and spirits. Holden Village will lead small group sessions relating to the arts, pottery, cross country skiing and snowshoeing (snow permitting), and nature throughout the weekend.

BLESSING

Spirit of the empty places,
Spirit of new beginnings, here we are.
In this often difficult season of cold and night,
it seems the light we need might go away forever.
Help us to catch our breath so we might not stumble into despair.
Let the past be our guide,
helping us to the future we need —
just on the horizon, unlocking, opening, growing.
