Chemometrics without Equations (or Hardly Any)
November 15; 8:30am – 5:00pm
Instructor: Neal Gallagher, Eigenvector Research
Course Description:
Chemometrics without Equations (CWE) is designed for those who wish to explore the problem-solving power of machine learning tools without high level mathematics. Course emphasis is on proper development and interpretation of models as applied to real-life problems. The objective is to teach in a simple way so that participants will be better chemical data science practitioners and managers. CWE, introduces Principal Components Analysis used for exploratory data analysis/pattern recognition, and regression methods Classical Least Squares and Partial Least Squares regression. Classification methods SIMCA and PLS Discriminant Analysis are also discussed. The course concludes with methods for model improvement with advanced preprocessing and variable selection.

PFAS – A Wonder Chemical Which Became a Nightmare
Note for this course only: The New Jersey Site Remediation Professional Licensing Board has approved attendees of this course to receive eight (8) Technical Continuing Education Credits upon attending and participation in class discussions
November 17; 8:30am – 5:00pm
Instructor: Jay Meegoda, NJ Institute of Technology
Course Description:
Toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” are now widespread, known contaminants in air, water, soil and food. They’re commonly detected in people’s blood everywhere, in the US and globally. PFAS chemicals show up in consumer and household products, cookware, clothing, children’s products, food packaging, firefighting foams and manufacturing wastes. These toxic pollutants can spread quickly and do not break down easily in the environment. PFAS exposures are increasingly linked to a host of health problems, from cancers to reproductive and developmental damages impacting infants, children and their families. Hence in this short course an in-depth presentation of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances or PFAS will be given. Topic includes a brief history followed by human intake of PFAS and Health Concerns, discharge of PFAS and Fate and Transport in drinking water, soils, sediments and bio-sludge. Finally, Detection and complete Destruction of PFAS is discussed. Click here for more details.
Green Analytical Chemistry
November 17, 8:30am – 12:00pm (Half-Day)
Instructor: Douglas Raynie, South Dakota State University
Course Description:
This half-day course is designed to provide participants with an overview of green chemistry and an application of green chemistry principles to analytical methods. Solvent concerns and means to address the environmental, health, and safety concerns of solvent use are discussed. Specific green approaches to analytical separations and spectroscopy, along with case studies, are presented. Finally, metrics for assessing the greenness of analytical procedures are compared.
