The Surprising Secret to My Biggest Career Move

Let me take you back to a moment that changed the course of my career.

I was a chemist who fell in love with sales.

My territory was thriving, and I had become the go-to mentor for every new sales rep.

I knew I was ready for more, but the company I worked for didn’t have the “more” I wanted.

So, I started looking elsewhere — quietly, with no urgency, just curiosity.

One Sunday afternoon at a small tradeshow, everything changed.

This week, I’m sharing how I took a leap of faith, sold myself to a company President, and secured a role I wasn’t “qualified” for on paper.

It’s a story of betting on yourself, even when you’re the only one who sees your potential.

Let’s get into it.

How to Bet on Yourself and Win

Success in sales — and in life — often comes down to three core actions: advocating for yourself, stepping up when it matters, and delivering results consistently.

Here’s how you can do it:

Advocate for Yourself

Don’t wait for someone to notice your potential. If I hadn’t spoken up at the tradeshow, I would have been just another name in the applicant pool. Be ready to share your story and highlight your unique value.

Embrace the Unknown

You don’t need to meet every qualification to succeed. When I was told I didn’t have the specialty chemical experience they were looking for, I didn’t back down. Instead, I leaned into the skills I knew I had — problem-solving, relationship-building, and a track record of delivering results.

Execute with Consistency

Once you get the opportunity, the real work begins. Show up every day ready to prove your value. I didn’t waste time after being hired. I focused on delivering results, building trust, and making an impact from day one.

List Your Transferable Skills

What abilities can you bring to the table, regardless of industry? Get clear on these, and be ready to share them confidently.

Network Proactively

Engage with people who can influence your career. Be genuine, be curious, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.

Show Results, Not Just Effort

It’s easy to talk about what you can do. Make sure you have examples of real results you’ve delivered. When you can point to proven success, your credibility skyrockets.

Pause and Reflect

When was the last time you spoke up for yourself?

If you’ve hesitated to apply for a role because you didn’t meet every qualification, take a step back and reassess.

Are you undervaluing your skills?

This week, take time to reflect on your strengths and think about the opportunities you might be passing up simply because they don’t seem like a perfect fit.

It’s time to own your worth and speak up for what you bring to the table.

This week, challenge yourself to find one moment to make your voice heard — in a team meeting, with a key client, or during an interview.

Don’t let opportunities slip by because you stayed silent.

If you’re ready to level up and want a partner to help build your confidence, let’s talk.
