FOR MY MOM

Today marks the one-year anniversary of my mother’s passing. She passed away two weeks after my father. My parents were married for over 50 years and theirs is one of the greatest love stories of all time.

My parents were my parental soulmates. I could never imagine the world without them, until I had no other choice but to take my first step into a life where they were no longer a phone call away.

My Mom – along with my Dad – gave her marrow to her family. She created a home and a family life filled with knowledge, culture, art, music, beauty, and most of all with happiness and love. She loved fiercely and completely. She gave everything to her husband and children. She gave us life. She gave us the world.

I miss you every day, Mom. Je t’aime Mamma.

HOPE

I DEDICATE HOPE TO MY PARENTS who were my guiding lights, to my husband who is my rock and who held me up in the valley of my most profound sorrow, and to our newborn baby girl. She is our greatest joy, the love of our lives, the HOPE for which we have been waiting, and the answer to our prayers.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT "HOPE"

“I was captivated by this from the first notes. And at the transition to the finale at around the 5 minute mark I had to just stop and do nothing else but listen and be swept away. I do not say any of this lightly. It’s gorgeous. What a beautiful final gift [to her parents] to know that their daughter composed such beauty.”

Jay Jochnowitz, Editor-at-large, Albany Times Union

“Have you ever wondered what the word HOPE sounds like musically? Pianist Mary Dawood Catlin gives you a very good musical definition of that word in her new single HOPE. I HOPE you will give it a listen and download it.

At the START you can hear and feel the sadness and immobility of the slow tempo and the left-hand rhythm that reminds one of slowly tapping fingers and the inaction of everything else. As the piece progresses you can hear the tempo getting a little faster and the right hand getting more active, like one is thinking about possibilities of getting through an upsetting experience – possibly a loss of a family member or close friend or some other of life’s challenges and disappointments.

The tempo increases more as you can feel and sense HOPE developing, and the person considers possible actions to help – even though you can’t fast forward time. Towards the END there is a sense of purpose and even anticipation looking to the future – which is what HOPE helps us find if we are lucky.

Mary is an extremely gifted concert pianist who can play anything as you can hear in her previous full album NOSTALGIA which I highly recommend also. Here, she uses music like second language, saying more with her playing and composing skills than can be written well with words alone.”

Alan Storeygard, Jazz pianist, composer & physician

“When I listen to someone like you…. Someone that makes a musical instrument a living thing, someone that infuses their soul into their music…. Well, I am truly in awe. God has blessed you so much. He truly gives you His favor.”
