Chapman Staff Profile: Bruce Robertson

Meet Bruce Robertson, Director of Student Services

Bruce Robertson has been an integral part of the Chapman School of Seamanship since 2003. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Bruce leads our Student Services team, ensuring students receive the guidance and support needed to achieve their training goals.

Bruce plays a crucial role in maintaining the school’s approvals with the State of Florida Department of Education, Veterans Administration, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Local Career Centers. He is also the primary contact for private and government contracts and helps students navigate USCG licensing requirements through our package review service.

When he’s not at Chapman, Bruce enjoys spending time with his family and grandchildren, as well as watching NFL games.

We’re proud to have Bruce on our team and appreciate his dedication to student success!

Tech Tips from Yamaha Master Technician Shane Bowlin

Prevent Yamaha Prop Shaft Damage: Check for Fishing Line

Did you know? Fishing line wrapped around your Yamaha outboard’s prop shaft can damage seals and cause costly repairs.

Prevention Tips:

  • Remove your propeller regularly to check for entangled fishing line.
  • If found, cut and remove it before it damages the seals.
  • Inspect for oil leaks or milky gear oil, which indicate water intrusion.
  • Apply marine grease before reinstalling the prop to prevent corrosion.

A few minutes of maintenance can save thousands in repairs and keep your Yamaha running smoothly!

Safe Boating Tip: Engine Cut-Off Switch Requirements

  • Federal Law Reminder: Vessels under 26 feet must have an engine cut-off switch (ECOS) unless they have an enclosed cabin.
  • Why it matters: Prevents injuries by shutting off the engine if the operator falls overboard.
  • In effect since: April 1, 2021.
  • Requirement: Must be worn when operating on plane or above displacement speed.

Stay safe—follow federal regulations for a secure boating experience!
