Growing from Our Roots
CALC’s New Mission & Vision
October 2026
The Community Alliance of Lane County is delighted to share our new mission and vision [www.calclane.org/mission-values] with the greater community.
This moment has been nearly two years in the making. Throughout this process, CALC staff, board members, and community members have explored who we are, what we value, and what value we want to help create. Through those conversations, we established a set of shared values [www.calclane.org/calcs-new-mission-vision-values] that continue to serve as our corner stone.
With these values as our foundation we kept asking ourselves, and our community partners, an important question: How can CALC best live these values while carrying forward our legacy of social justice and community organizing?
The answer emerged through an ongoing and deeply collaborative process. We are so thankful for the countless individuals who engaged with us throughout this process. A special thank you to Banyan Consulting for helping us navigate and nurture this work.
As we began putting words to our shared purpose, something powerful happened: we found ourselves feeling both excited and relieved. The language that was coming up resonated deeply with our goals and hopes for the future. Most importantly, we recognized a strong sense of alignment across the people who make up our organization and our broader community.
It’s with great excitement that we share with you, our new mission and vision:
Mission: We cultivate and strengthen historically underserved community organizers and leaders in Lane County.
Vision: We envision community organizers who are supported and successful in advancing a just and equitable world.
These statements represent more than some new language. They reflect an evolution in how CALC understands and carries forward its work. CALC has long been a seedbed for organizers, solidarity, and movement building. For 60 years, this organization has helped people find one another, develop their voices, build relationships, and take collective action for their community. So, in many ways, this new direction feels less like starting over and more like growing from our roots.
One way we are putting this vision into practice is through Casa de la Unidad, where we are cultivating spaces for organizers from underrepresented communities to access organizing roles, build relationships, and find community. This is one part of our continued commitment to nurturing the people, relationships, and movements that make lasting change possible.
This is just the beginning. There are many ways to be a part of CALC’s new chapter whether you want to volunteer, participate in an event or program, connect with other organizers, or join the board of directors. We would love to have you with us as we keep this work moving forward and growing strong.
*Please consider getting involved with CALC*[docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSegk9NbTfRFrAD6X4ydHkbZw6UzNuc0zQ6HVhnZE3ZGbgxX2Q/viewform] and/or donating to support our new goals.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Whether you are new to CALC or have been connected to our work for years, we welcome your interest in volunteering. There are many ways to get involved—from helping with events and community outreach to supporting campaigns, committees, communications, organizing, and other areas of our work.

The costs of war with Iran extend well beyond the missiles, bombs, and deployment of personnel and munitions that have totaled upwards of the Pentagon’s estimates of $29 billion. The extra fuel costs to consumers since the start of the war is over $40 billion.
That $40 billion:
- Could pay for the entire federal bridge investment program announced in 2024 to repair, restore, and modernize over 10,200 of the nation’s bridges;
- Exceeds the estimated cost of completely redoing the US air traffic control system
- Are twice the cost of the Federal EV Charging and Electrification Program proposed under two laws passed during the Biden Administration

For the third year in a row peace activists from the Eugene Friends Meeting, Eugene Friends Church, CALC and People for Justice and Peace in Palestine organized a fundraiser, A Simple Meal for Gaza. The event raises donations for the humanitarian work of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and World Central Kitchen (WCK) in Gaza.
The simple meal provided to participants in the fundraiser was a traditional Palestinian dish of rice, lentils and caramelized onions called mujaddara. The meal was prepared and donated by Chef Ibrahim Hamide, the proprietor of Café Soriah in Eugene. Ibrahim is originally from Bethlehem and is also famous as a local peace activist.
The Simple Meal held on 3 October 2026 at the First United Methodist Church raised $35,096 for Gaza relief. Those funds went to the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and World Central Kitchen (WCK) in Gaza.
Organizers of the Simple Meal for Gaza hope that if another fundraising effort is required next year, that it can focus on reviving hope, employment and reconstruction in Gaza.
In addition to the local effort, here's some of the big organizations providing help to Gaza if you want to donate to the cause:

Boycott Windmill Farms Mushrooms (in Washington and Oregon)
CALC endorsed this boycott. We invite others to sign the petition and do the same.
Windmill refuses to recognize the union their workers elected to form in 2022.
WinCo is a worker-owned company (the stock is owned by the employees) and our store delegations found that most of the store managers are supportive of the mushroom workers. However, the produce purchasing happens at the corporate headquarters in Boise, Idaho. Most of the store managers promised to give the letter from Teresa Romero and the one from Farm Worker Ministry Northwest, explaining the history of the struggle, to their management, and pass on their support of the mushroom boycott.
We are now escalating the public pressure on WinCo Foods in an effort to get them to honor the boycott and stop purchasing Windmill mushrooms.
Your help is crucial to this effort. There are ways you can help:
1. Take Action and send a pre-written email (you can edit it) to WinCo telling them you are honoring the boycott and urging them to stop buying the mushrooms {https://actionnetwork.org/letters/winco-foods-honor-the-windmill-farms-mushroom-boycott} OR
2. Use this link for WinCo Customer Service to send a message to WinCo. Copy and paste this script in the comments or use your own script {https://apps.wincofoods.com/contact-winco-foods/} OR
3. Call WinCo's customer complaint number and ask them to stop selling Windmill: (800) 824-1706
4. Send the Action Alert link "Take Action" to others in your network {https://actionnetwork.org/letters/winco-foods-honor-the-windmill-farms-mushroom-boycott} - Action Network
5. Download the flier with QR code linking to the email and distribute to your community {https://us.list-manage.com/wUpbswd8nin}.
6. Don't buy mushrooms at WinCo without checking the label first. If the mushrooms aren't labeled, ask the produce manager what brand before buying.
7. Buy mushrooms at stores that are honoring the boycott: Market of Choice, Capella Market, Natural Grocers and natural food stores.
These are Actions that everyone can take with little effort. THANK YOU!

We abhor all violence. We are heartbroken by the killing and maiming of people in the Middle East, whether they are Palestinian, Israeli, or citizens of any other country, particularly innocent children, people with disabilities and the elderly.
We call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire; an immediate stop to the killing, injuring and all forms of violence to anyone. We demand humanitarian aid be sent to the civilians affected and demand members of Congress stop sending military aid to the region. Diplomacy - not weapons - is needed in the Middle East. Only the weapons manufacturers and oil industry benefit from war. The largest contributor of greenhouse gases to Earth's environment is the Military Industrial Congressional Complex.
We also demand an immediate and complete end to the violence committed by ICE. People in our community are being picked up and treated violently by masked agents with no ID, put in unmarked cars and being taken away. Often their families do not know where their loved ones are for days. We strongly stand against this inhumane and illegal treatment of our community members.
In peace,

Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector
I’m looking for nonprofit organizations that would be interested in
attending one of two volunteer recruitment fairs that I will hold.
Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector
UO class at 5:15 pm, October 13 and 22
Students have two options to complete the final assignment for the class: either writing a research paper or volunteering with a local nonprofit on two occasions for two hours each. Students have told me in the past that they wanted to choose the volunteer opportunity but had trouble finding them. I decided to try bringing the opportunities into the classroom by hosting a recruitment fair in class.
Students are everything from freshmen to seniors and come from all disciplines. I have about 130 registered for the class, so I hope it will be a good use of your time to attend the event and connect with prospective volunteers.
If you’re interested in attending, please complete this survey: https://bit.ly/4ri67Bb

https://calendar.uoregon.edu/event/data-centers-whose-interests-and-knowledge-matter
Data centers are rapidly reshaping communities across Oregon and the nation, generating public debate about energy, water, land, economic development, and the distribution of public resources. These controversies raise broader questions about the role of the public in decisions about major infrastructure; and about the trust people place in the institutions responsible for making those decisions.
Drawing on her research on public opinion, political culture, rural communities, and democratic life, 2026–27 Wayne Morse Chair Katherine Cramer will use controversies surrounding data centers as a window into how people understand the public’s role in shaping their communities.

Why Should I Report?
While bias incidents and crimes sometimes target specific individuals, they often violate an entire group or community’s sense of safety and belonging.
Graffiti on the wall, fliers, anonymous emails, and language meant to harass individuals convey intolerance that impacts all of us. We want Oregon to be welcoming and inclusive.
You can report to us online any time: https://justice.oregon.gov/crimereporting/hatecrime

Have you experienced or witnessed a hate crime or a bias incident?
A hate crime is a crime motivated in part or whole by bias against another person’s actual or perceived protected class–their race, color, disability, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Examples include racist graffiti, stealing Pride flags, threats using slur words, assaulting someone based on their identity.
A bias incident is a non-criminal hostile expression motivated in part or whole by another person’s actual or perceived protected class, again meaning their race, color, disability, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Examples include hate speech; using a racial, ethnic, or other slurs; displaying hateful symbols or flags; creating racist images/drawings; mocking someone with a disability; or telling or sharing offensive “jokes” about someone’s identity.
Oregon’s Bias Response Hotline is here to listen, support, and help. Our “Report and Support System” is designed to support victims and help track hate crimes and bias incidents. We want to:
