Halifax Beautification Committee
Expanding to 7 members
I am writing on behalf of the Halifax Beautification Committee as we seek to expand our committee from 5 to 7 members. The last couple years have seen us move from a rather dormant entity to a progressive, dynamic committee that has:
Mobilized over 150 people, including scouts, school groups, families and individual residents, for town cleanup days in April and November to reduce litter in Halifax.
Proposed a bylaw to eliminate the distribution of single use plastic bags at point of sale while encouraging Halifax residents to switch to reusable bags. The bylaw passed overwhelmingly and will take effect March 1, 2020.
Introduced a new “Adopt a Planter” program resulting in 27 planters being distributed at town buildings, local churches, banks, and the post office.
Continued to oversee the care and maintenance of the Margaret Fitzgerald Memorial Garden, currently through C-MAC Services in Halifax.
Promoted the conservation of water through the sale of Rain Barrels Partnered with Keep Massachusetts Beautiful and Recycle Smart.
Our Committee presently meets roughly monthly for 1½ hours on Mondays at 1pm. We are looking to move to an evening time (6:30pm) to accommodate more people’s schedules. (We typically do not meet during July and August and December). As you can see, the commitment is not an inordinate one. Any extra-curricular activity is voluntary, e.g participating in Town Cleanup, distributing flyers, etc. What we are offering is an opportunity to become involved in something you care about and appreciate the camaraderie and satisfaction that is involved.
Thanks for your consideration,
Greg Cowan, Beautification Committee member

Monponset Telegraph or Halifax News
Vol. 1 Halifax, MA. November, 1868 No. 1

(This is the only copy I have ever come across and appears to have been written for amusement.)

This Paper
is Published in Halifax,
Every 3 Months
Terms: - 1 Cent per copy.
Advertisements inserted for 10 cents
per square of 12 lines, each insertion.
"This paper is got up for the purpose of giving the summary of what transpires between the young folks, every three months, and other items of interest. Boys and girls must be on their guard in their doings, or else they may find their names in this paper. Our reporters are numerous, therefore we caution you again, to be on your guard.
If a beautiful woman lets her heart rest upon her lips, the first enterprising young man she meets may kiss the nice sweet prize away.
A woman's tears are generally more effective than her words. In such cases and is a less powerful element than water.
All young ladies who receive a copy of this paper are requested as a favor to send us some item of interest to be inserted.
Young folks when falling in love with each other, must take care not to fall out.
In the city of New York (unreadable) are 20,000 girls who earn their living by the manufacture of hoop skirts.
An enamored youth says his weakness is lass-itude.
A Utica paper contains the following brief but onerous paragraph:'
Ha, Ha!
It is a girl.'
'Each moment makes thee dearer." - as the parsimonious tradesman said to his extravagant wife.'
An unfortunate young man is searching everywhere for his sweetheart who was recently carried away by her feelings."

Hands-Free Driving Law Takes Effect February 23rd
Massachusetts law prohibits operators of motor vehicles and bicycles from using any electronic device, including mobile telephones, unless the device is used in hands-free mode.
The “hands-free” law will be effective on February 23, 2020.
Violators will be fined heavily. Repeated offenders will have to participate in a distracted driving educational program.
What does this mean for me?
- Drivers who are 18 and over can only use electronic devices and mobile phones in hands-free mode and are only permitted to touch devices to activate hands-free mode, not permitted to hold or support any electronic device/phone.
- Cannot touch phone except to activate the hands-free mode and can only enable when the device is installed or properly mounted to the windshield, dashboard, or center console in a manner that does not impede the operation of the motor vehicle.
- Not allowed to touch device for texting, emailing, apps, video, or internet use.
- Activation of GPS navigation is permitted when the device is installed or properly mounted.
- Handheld use is allowed only if the vehicle is both stationary and not located in a public travel lane, but is not allowed at red lights or stop signs.
- Voice to text and communication to electronic devices is legal only when device is properly mounted; use of headphone (one ear) is permitted.
- Drivers who are under 18 are not allowed to use any electronic devices. All phone use while driving is illegal, including use in hands-free mode.
Operators may use a cell phone to call 911 to report an emergency. If possible, safely pull over and stop before calling 911.

We all are challenged....
When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back.”
~Paulo Coelho, The Devil and Miss Prym
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”
~ Helen Keller, The Open Door
“Every woman that finally figured out her worth, has picked up her suitcases of pride and boarded a flight to freedom, which landed in the valley of change.” ~ Shannon L. Alder
“If you aren't in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?” ~ T.S. Eliot
|
I LOVED that T.S. Elliot quote. I spend the majority of my time in over my head, with my tippy toes just barely touching the bottom.
Sometimes its hard to get a gulp of air... but if I can just float... it can be relaxing if there are no storms and no choppy waves or undercurrent.
Took that analogy just about as far as I could ; )
Have a great week everyone, thanks for reading! ~ Jacquie
