Blazing New Trails at the Finals of the National Intercollegiate Insurance Sales Challenge

Competing at the national championship level of insurance sales competitions was a first for our students this year, and they rose to the occasion. Four outstanding students made up two teams and the team of Brandon Latting and Ben Sernett made it to the finals. Though the other two outstanding students, James Ozzauto and Nick Agenlian, didn't make the finals, they did what great Hawkeyes do and helped their classmates and their mentors prepare late into the night for the final round. All winners in our book.

A large group of Iowa faculty and students visited Cottingham & Butler recently. We used the occasion to celebrate our students' success. Left to right, Jim Lewis (Exec Dir. of the Vaughan Institute), Andy Butler (CEO, Cottingham & Butler), Brandon Latting and Ben Sernett (IISC finalists), Jace Glenn (C&B), Nick Agenlian, and Jimmy Ozzauto. All four team members were awarded $1,750 in scholarships for their success in this competition. Special thank you to Jace Glenn of Cottingham & Butler, pictured above with the teams he mentored and congrats on being selected as our 2023-2024 Vaughan Institute Mentor of the Year.

We had a great time meeting the other fantastic RMI students and directors from all over the country and had fun on the Florida State University campus, even catching an FSU baseball game with the group. The future of risk management leadership is looking bright. All students said it was a great experience and would recommend it to future students. We will be back next year!

Thought Leaders and Innovators Speaker Series

We've had an amazing lineup of 13 great Thought Leaders and Innovators this semester and many more planned for the fall. Traci Clarke, Assurance Advisor at Worley (50,000 employee global engineering firm) shared her story with more than 200 of our Principles of Risk Management students on how she is following her passion of reducing global warming as a project risk manager for one of the world's first carbon capture plants. She also spoke to 210 of the 360 member Women in Business student organization here on campus, (Vaughan Institute is a sponsor). She shared her journey from Iowa grad and the lessons learned along the way.

Here's a link to Traci's Women In Business presentation.

Global Insurance Symposium &

Global Insurance Accelerator Demo Day

Learn more about the GIA!

The Vaughan Institute was the sponsor of the Global Insurance Accelerator's Demo Day at the Global Insurance Symposium. Seven amazing founders who used our start-up methodology, presented their pitches to a large crowd and demonstrated why innovation and insurance are essential partners to make the world safer, smarter, and more secure.

Special thanks to Dean Amy Kristof-Brown for her strong support of this strategic partnership with the GIA, and thank you to our Governor Kim Reynolds for being such an advocate for our industry. No wonder Iowa is an epicenter of insurance and innovation with a unified team of economic development, industry leaders, insurtech excellence, and world-class academia.

Celebrating our largest RMI class of 64 soon-to-be graduating seniors!

Vaughan Institute 2023-2024 Student of the Year

Congratulation to Nick Agenlian who was selected as our Vaughan Institute Student of the Year for 2023-2024. Nick is graduating in May and joining the team at Captive Resources in Itasca, IL. Nick picked up a $2,500 scholarship award for being instrumental to the Vaughan Institute in building out our CRM platform and helping us locate lost alumni to add to our ecosystem.

In the News

Grateful to be included on the Insurtech Rap podcast recently. Thank you Jason Gross, Manchester Story, for the opportunity to join John Wilson, UConn. We shared about how our RMI programs work together and our spirit of collaborative innovation. To that end, we are exploring ways to create a new Case Competition at ITC in Vegas this October. Think of it as a rematch of the Iowa vs. Connecticut Women's basketball game, only on the ITC stage. Stay tuned.
