Tweedy Mile Complete Streets Project
Celebrating the completion of the Tweedy Mile Complete Streets Project Phase I — a major step toward safer, more vibrant, and pedestrian-friendly streets in South Gate.
Improvements include high visibility crossing enhancements and corner bulb-outs at 11 intersections, parklets, in-roadway warning lights at four uncontrolled student crossings, traffic signal improvements for pedestrian safety, ADA ramp upgrades, paver restoration, and road rehabilitation from Dearborn Avenue to Dorothy Avenue.
The Project also includes other elements such as bike racks, bus shelters, way finding signs for Tweedy parking lots, trash receptacles, shade trees, and street furniture to encourage pedestrian and bicycle use.

Pedestrian Safety
As part of the Tweedy Mile Complete Streets project, new pedestrian safety enhancements have been implemented at four intersections, Elizabeth Avenue, San Gabriel Avenue, San Luis Avenue, and Dorothy Avenue.
These improvements include ADA-compliant curb ramps, pedestrian-activated rectangular rapid flashing beacons, bulb-outs, sidewalk upgrades and high visibility crosswalks.
Tweedy Boulevard Phase II will extend similar improvements to Montara Avenue, Washington Avenue, and Rosewood Avenues, further advancing efforts to create a safer, more walkable corridor.

Urban Orchard Park
Construction is under way and reaching substantial completion. Ongoing activities include landscape, irrigation, playground equipment, site lighting, stormwater equipment monitoring, and the construction of the knoll. The grand opening is scheduled for July 12, 2025.
The Urban Orchard is a 30-acre passive park located between the Los Angeles River, Firestone Boulevard, the Thunderbird Villa Mobile Home Park and the I-710 Freeway.
The two primary purposes are to divert and treat storm water run-off from the Los Angeles River and provide recreation opportunities to South Gate residents by constructing a new passive public park.
