Paddle the Lower River

Saturday, September 19, 2026

9:00AM - 1:00PM

We'll travel from Seth Green Park to Petten Street

(Approximately 5.0 miles)

Meet at 110 Petten Street - off Lake Ave.

Shuttle provided back to Seth Green Park

On this trip we will explore Lower Falls, pass by Seth Green Island, and under the Veterans Bridge into the "wilderness in the city" – an unspoiled area where you will forget that you are in the midst of an urban metropolis. Along the way we will stop to see and learn about Rochester's history as a coal, wheat, and cement port and terminus for the Underground Railroad. We will also discuss today’s Genesee River, the reasons why dredges must remove sediment from this area every year, and what is being done to reduce this problem.

The Waterways Center will provide a life vest, paddle, and kayak at the Seth Green Park launch site.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

● Pre-registration is required at Events — Genesee Waterways Center. Subject to cancellation in the event of adverse weather or insufficient registrations.

● You should be sufficiently experienced to be confident in your ability to paddle for several hours with limited rest. The waters of the lower river are generally calm and will not require technical skills.

● We will need to start promptly at the scheduled time, so please plan to arrive about 20 minutes early to sign in.

● There is little shade along the lower river. Dress accordingly (including a hat), apply sunscreen, and bring plenty of water, Gatorade, or other sports drinks. Be sure to bring a camera for some photos of wildlife on the river!

● Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult and all paddlers should be at least 10 years old.

Be sure to mark your calendar for our
