We’re on the move!

Community Care is embarking on a series of moves highlighted by our new Community Health Centre at 21 Angeline Street North in Lindsay. We are excited to share our new space with the community, and our Community Health Centre will position CCCKL to continue to offer essential services to the City of Kawartha Lakes.

October 19th was an important day in this journey, as our Dental Clinic opened its new home at our purpose built Community Health Centre. Other services will continue move over the next month, including our primary care clinic, GAIN team and CCCKL support teams, such as Finance and IT.

During November we are also completing minor renovations at our current CHC space, located at 152 Angeline St. N in Lindsay. This space will accommodate new teams coming to the building. We anticipate moving out of our current headquarters, located at 34 Cambridge St. South in Lindsay, by the end of November.

Please contact us at 705-324-7323 if you have any questions about our moves or where you will access CCCKL services going forward.

Community Care in the News

After a decade of planning, Kawartha Lakes Community Care staff are coming ‘home'

October is Community Support Month

Did you know that October is Community Support Month? Community support services support over one million Ontarians each year, including seniors and people with disabilities. These services include nursing care and personal care, homemaking, Meals on Wheels, adult day programs, transportation to medical appointments, caregiver support, and hospice and palliative care services. They help clients to live independently in their homes and communities for as long as possible, and reduce the burden on family caregivers and other parts of the health care system. As Ontario’s population ages, demand for community support services will continue to increase.

At Community Care, our Community Support Services provide a crucial role in supporting independence and enhancing the quality of life for people in our community.

We need volunteers like you to help support our Community Support programs. We have a volunteer opportunity for everyone! Visit www.ccckl.ca/volunteer to learn more and apply!

“I purchase meals for my husband who has dementia. The frozen meals are easier for him to eat. The meat is cut thinner and vegetables cut smaller. When I put the frozen meals in front of him, he just eats it right away. The meals are very senior centered. They cook fast and are very convenient.”

Community Health and Wellbeing Week

October 16 – 23 also marked Community Health and Wellbeing Week, which is an opportunity to recognize the important role Community Health Centres have in helping people to access vital primary care services. Community Health Centres are key in helping to navigate the healthcare system and provide critical services to support community health, such as disease prevention and other wellbeing supports.

At CCCKL, our new Community Health Centre highlights our belief that Community Health is Essential. It acts as a hub for community health programs for the community of Kawartha Lakes. From mental health services and groups to pathways for housing and food support, from foot care to seniors’ care, from services for vulnerable communities to outreach for isolated people in rural and remote areas, community health is essential in thousands of different ways across Ontario every single day, including Kawartha Lakes.

Visit our website at www.ccckl.ca to learn more about the community health and wellbeing services we provide.

Walk in the Halls is Back!

Offered in partnership with the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team, Walk in the Halls provides the chance to walk in a warm, safe, and fun environment during the winter months. The program is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Step count logs and a limited number of pedometers are available so participants can track their progress.

The walking program begins on November 7 and will run over the winter months every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 – 7:00pm at L.C.V.I., located at 260 Kent St. W. in Lindsay. No pre-registration is required. Call us at 705-324-7323 ext. 165 or email wellness@ccckl.ca for more information.

Indoor Short Mat Bowling with the Lindsay Lawn Bowling Club

CCCKL supported our friends at the Lindsay Lawn Bowling Club to secure funding to support staying active during the winter months. They were successful in doing so and will be offering Indoor Short Mat Bowling starting November 15th.

This program is free of charge and is for new bowlers to learn how to bowl in a safe, warm indoor space. The bowls will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am – 12pm and will run until mid-January.

Space is limited, so make sure you pre-register by November 3! For more information and registration, contact lindsaylawnbowls@gmail.com or call Rhys Warren at 705-928-2344.

A Shining Star for Our Sages Volunteers

This month we presented two Shining Star Awards to our amazing volunteers, Helen and Claire, who run the Sages classes in Fenelon Falls. We are so grateful for everything you both do for Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes!

If you know an amazing CCCKL Staff or Volunteer you would like to recognize with a Shining Star Award, please reach out to the Community Care Foundation at foundation@ccckl.ca.

CCCKL Helps to 'Stomp Out Stigma'

The Frost Mental Health Initiative Team organized the 'Stomp Out Stigma' event during Mental Illness Awareness Week, where they welcomed students and staff to engage in discussions about mental health.

Hospice Services was pleased to be part of Stomp Out Stigma on Thursday, October 5th. Volunteers found themselves occupied as they interacted with over 150 attendees at their information booth, with numerous individuals seeking additional details and more information about CCCKL. This highlighted the evident demand for grief support services in our community. We eagerly anticipate participating in this event again next year.

CCCKL Presents Meals on Wheel Online Frozen Store at OCSA Conference

Members from our Community Support Services team were invited to attend the Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) Conference this month in Markham to highlight the successes of our Meals on Wheels online frozen store. Our team was successful in our application to the OCSA Elevate Impact Hub, and we were given the chance to present an academic poster that demonstrated the importance the online store has in our community as well as our plans to improve the store following its launch.

Community Care Foundation Update

Welcome to this update from the Community Care Foundation. Our Mission is to help to build healthy communities across Kawartha Lakes by raising funds to support Community Care's range of services.

The ultimate ladies night is back!

We are pleased to announce that the Community Care Foundation is hosting Handbags for Health again this year for the first time since 2020. We are so excited to have this fantastic event again in person, and we would love to have your support this year.

Handbags for Health (formally Handbags for Hospice) is our premiere event, that offers an evening of fun, fashion and fundraising. This “girls night out” event brings women together to let loose, mingle, shop, indulge and of course be charitable! Catch up with old friends and business colleagues while enjoying current fashion and beauty trends, tasty foods, and raising funds for Community Care’s programs and services.

Handbags for Health will take place on Friday, January 26, 2024 from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m., at Lindsay Armouries, 210 Kent St. W.

All proceeds towards this event help! We currently have several sponsorships available, from Gold sponsors to Wine Wall sponsorships. If you can support, please reach out by email to foundation@ccckl.ca or give us a call 705-324-7323 ext. 164. If you are unable to sponsor, you can purchase a ticket and join us at the event. Tickets can be purchased through email, phone, or in person. The cost of tickets will be $65, or you can purchase a table for eight with reserved seating for $520.

Why support Handbags for Health?

Though Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes does receive some outside funding, the reality is that many of our programs need to be funded or require additional funds. Our Handbags for Health will help raise much-needed funds to support our extensive programs this year. These funds help provide new Specialized Transportation vans or our support Community Dental Clinic. They provide subsidies for transportation, Meals on Wheels, and Adult Day programming. They help to ensure that our Hospice and Grief Services continue to serve those in need in our community, and so much more.

We can’t wait to see you at Handbags for Health!

Thank You to Tribute Communities!

A huge thank you to Tribute Communities who donated $50,000 on Friday, October 13th to our Capital Campaign for our new Community Health Centre (CHC) at 21 Angeline Street North in Lindsay. This CHC is our first purpose-built “home”, and will help us meet the growing healthcare needs of our community. The new building will be home to our primary care clinic, dental clinic, Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Network (GAIN) programs, and more!

Thank you again to Tribute Communities for their generous donation that will help anchor community-based health care in Kawartha Lakes.
