Challenges and Controversies in High Risk Breast and Ovarian Cancer Management
Sandhya Pruthi, MD & Holly J. Pederson, MD

Identification and management of the high-risk patient is becoming increasingly challenging given complexities in testing, controversies over who should be tested and the need for a personalized approach to each patient. Different models of genetic counseling incorporating telemedicine and IT are emerging which may increase access to care. Providers need to be confident in the identification and management of both gene positive and high risk gene negative patients, including being knowledgeable about emerging technologies such as the polygenic risk score, future trends in ovarian cancer screening, new breast imaging modalities and lifestyle measures and supplements that may reduce risk. This session will address the role of risk-reducing mastectomy in the absence of highly penetrant gene mutations and recommendations for the timing and type of risk-reducing pelvic surgery. Attendees will learn the data around hormone replacement in the setting of surgical menopause and how to implement guidelines in your practice to facilitate a multidisciplinary approach in the management of individuals identified as being at increased risk. This session will address these topics comprehensively including providing an expert-led panel on the challenging types of cases that you face every day.
  • Including being knowledgeable about substratification tools such as the polygenic risk score
  • Attendees will review the data pertaining to hormone replacement in the setting of surgical menopause
