'Your advisory committee for your life needs to change with you'

“As you get older and as your jobs change and as the industries change, it needs to evolve because one of the things you'll discover is that you're changing and you're evolving and the conversations that you have need to change… If you are a reporter and you're covering government or whatever — finance, cultural issues — whatever. So who are you talking to? Who's telling you about the financial side of the business, about what's happening, not just in nonprofit news, but what's happening in commercial media? … Who are you talking to across the barricades who you can trust to give you a clear-eyed view of what the industry looks like and what's happening? …My advisory board… it's very diverse both in terms of age, both in terms of the positions people hold, because I don't want to miss anything."

-- Michael Bolden, executive director of American Press Institute, excerpt from "How to build an advisory committee for your journalism career" (National Press Foundation)
