BLACK HISTORY MONTH

In honor of Black History Month, we celebrate the profound impact that Black composers have made on classical music. From trailblazers like Florence Price and William Grant Still, to contemporary voices shaping the genre today, like Jessie Montgomery and Kris Bowers, Black artists have continuously redefined classical music.

Our latest blog post highlights 10 essential works—spanning from historical to contemporary compositions—that deserve a place on every classical music playlist.

Name A Room!

photo credit: Marc Mann, for Music Haven

This summer, we built new practice rooms to give our students more space to hone their craft. These rooms have quickly become a safe haven for both solo practice and group collaboration—so much so that students eagerly race to claim their slots on the sign-up sheets!

Now, you have the opportunity to leave a lasting impact by sponsoring a practice room, group classroom, or studio. Each room will be hand-painted by students in honor of its sponsor, creating a meaningful and inspiring space for future musicians. If you or your business is interested in sponsoring a room, contact Lygia at Lygia@musichavenct.org.

HSQ Chamber Series Concert: Music In Stillness

Music In Stillness, the second concert in the Haven String Quartet’s (HSQ) Chamber Concert Series, opened with Pohádka (Fairy-Tale), a poignant duet by Leoš Janáček inspired by an epic poem by Russian author Vasily Zhukovsky. Performed by Jacob Wang (piano) and Philip Boulanger (cello), the piece, born from sorrow, unfolded like an intimate conversation between old friends—evoking the splendor of nature, echoes of past regrets, and the bittersweet beauty of lost love, all wrapped in the playful banter that defines deep friendship.

HSQ continued the evening with a breathtaking selection, performing Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, Mozart’s Dissonance, and Osvaldo Golijov’s Tenebrae—each offering intricate layers of introspection and stillness.

Adding to the night’s magic, our student ensemble, Music Lanterns, captivated the audience with newly rediscovered works by Sawney Freeman. Read more about the revival of his music here in "CT'S HIDDEN TREASURE: SAWNEY FREEMAN."
