Chaos Quilting

Thanks to Marissa for our July program on chaotic quilting. She explained how she uses orphan blocks and extra block-of-the-month fabrics to either make a coordinating quilt back or a new quilt top! Check out her handout below to learn more!

Quilters Trading Post planned for August

We will be having a between-the-quilt-shows Trading Post Friday, August 15 and Saturday, August 16 to sell all the stuff that is accumulating in the storage unit and your sewing room. We will need lots of help to make it a success.

We will sell anything quilting and sewing related, including furniture and lighting. All proceeds will go to the guild to help us with our charity quilt projects and other outreach activities.

How you can help:

  • Gather items that you want to donate. Price them (pricing guidelines attached to an earlier email). Note that we have a special value category for items that are barely used or unopened.
  • Drop them off at the sale site: Vinton Woods Clubhouse, 3400 Cedar Lane, Lafayette, after noon on Friday, August 15. Contact Andrea Schmidt if you can't bring them that day or need help.
  • Sign up to help with setup and/or working during the sale times. The link to the SignUpGenius site is below. Need help signing up? Contact Andrea!
  • Shop! OTQG members only from 5-7 pm on August 15. Open to everyone on August 16 from 9-3.
  • Consider helping us clean up at the end and finding homes for the leftovers. Donna Mounts will take fabric to make into kits, but there will be books, magazines, notions, etc. that will need new homes. If you have suggestions, let us know!
  • Tell everyone you know about the sale. Repost the Facebook post. We will have a flyer available soon, too, that you can share.

Check out July's Show & Tell

All Creatures Big & Small

Last year for our quilt show, members made a variety of quilts featuring creatures. TAF has agreed to show these pieces in its gallery in June of 2026. If anyone wants to make an additional creature quilt, that option is available.

2026 Quilt Challenge

Be inspired by your favorite flower, your garden, a beautiful vase containing a stunning bouquet or the perseverance of the hardy dandelion growing from a crack in the sidewalk. This challenge is sure to make you smile. Any technique can be used for making

flowers…traditional piecing, appliqué, folded flowers, English paper piecing etc.

  • Each OTQG Member is eligible to enter one quilt for the challenge.
  • Quilt should be a maximum size of 24 x 24 inches. Quilts can be smaller but no less than 12 x 12 inches.
  • Quilt must have 3 layers (backing, batting, top) held together with quilting or tying.
  • Quilt should have a finished edge, either a binding or a facing.
  • At this time, the quilt does not need a sleeve for hanging but will need a label on the back.
  • Quilts need to be finished by the day of the quilt show (to be determined), but the maker will fill out a registration form when it becomes available. This form will allow us to plan the display.

2026 Guild Officers

This year's officers have all expressed interest in continuing to serve in 2026. However, we do have two roles opening to help the guild's work. If you are interested, talk to the OTQG President, Marj Rush Hovde.

Charity Quilting

One of the things our members love most about our group is the charity work we do. Currently we have the following needs:

  • Precut projects need to be sewn and brought back with the pattern and Ziplock bags! (thanks Donna Mounts!)
  • Keep scrap batting for Meals on Wheels placemats. If each members could make at least one 12" x 18" in the coming months, that would be great. One side should have holiday fabric; the other side can be all seasons/plain. All are due by December 1.
  • Pillowcase kits for Quilts for Kids. Try the burrito method for a quick and easy way to sew one!
  • Labels are available for donated quilts, letting recipients know that a member of OTQG made the item.
  • We have almost enough blocks for two QOV log cabin quilts. Nancy Greenwood has kits and is asking for members to help sew 12.5" x 12.5" blocks.

Gallery Exhibit "A Drop of Emerald Poison"

Until September 14, 2025

Art Museum of Greater Lafayette

This exhibit, developed by the Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio regions of SAQA, (Studio Art Quilt Associates) takes its theme from a beautiful but toxic emerald green color used in fashions, wallpaper, soaps, paints, and toys.

It was replaced by the end of the 19th century with less toxic pigments and dyes.

All the exhibit's quilts use a modern shade of emerald green as a reminder of the color's tragic history.

Bag Making Class

Nettie is teaching a class on how to make the ByAnnie Side Hustle Bag Saturday, July 19th at the Quilted Bee in Monticello.
