The city of Sterling Heights Nice Neighbor Award honors residents and businesses that go above and beyond to improve the quality of life for their Sterling Heights neighbors!

Scott VanLuven, a 14-year veteran member of SHPD's Citizens on Patrol group, was most recently recognized as a Nice Neighbor at the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

On Aug. 13, Scott was in the right place at the right time when he was driving by Clinton River North Park and stopped to help an attempted abduction of a 7-year-old girl.

Scott, witnessing unusual activity as he was driving through, quickly maneuvered his truck to block a male subject's vehicle so he couldn't flee the park. Scott confronted the subject, pulled him out of his car, and held him down until SHPD arrived on the scene.

Thank you to Scott for his impeccable timing, quick thinking, truly heroic actions, and continued service to our community.

The Sterling Heights Planning Commission will be holding a workshop to begin the review of the Lakeside redevelopment proposal at a Special Meeting on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at Sterling Heights City Hall.

This special meeting is open to the public and will kick off the discussion about the project before the Planning Commission’s Nov. 7 Public Hearing on the project development agreement.

As we continue the rewrite of our Master Plan, we want to make sure we include the voices and feedback from residents of all ages.

Our Planning Department recently hosted an art contest asking students what their favorite place is in Sterling Heights. Students were asked to submit a piece of art that depicts an array of places and perspectives that make Sterling Heights special.

Their drawings and paintings will be included with the Master Plan and will aid in demonstrating that the City plans for all ages and that we're a community that has something for everyone.

Thank you to all of our talented artists for your wonderful works of art!

We're working on our next brush-taking work of public art, and the Sterling Heights Art Commission is looking for a talented artist to help create it.

The City will be replacing two of the three clock faces with two distinct artistic designs on the Clock Tower at Fire Station #1, located on Van Dyke Avenue at 17 Mile Road. These designs, when put up, will be backlit to ensure visibility during nighttime hours.

Applications are being accepted until Oct. 25.
