HONORING THE PAST
This year marks the 60th Anniversary of St Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church in Douglaston.
Each week we will be highlighting an event from the past sixty years.
We hope you enjoy reminiscing!
St. Sarkis Church Mourns the Passing of Mr. Bedros Givelekian, Chairman Emeritus May 13, 2013

Chairman of the Board of Trustees for 20 years, from 1983 to 2003, Mr. Bedros Givelekian’s chairmanship was during the most turbulent times in the history of St. Sarkis Church. Following the fire which destroyed the church on May 21, 1985, Mr. Givelekian devoted all his energy and strength to rebuild St. Sarkis. Often at great personal sacrifice, he achieved his goal and we are here today because of his great leadership. Together with Jack Chadrjian and a dedicated group of parishioners, Mr. Bedros worked very hard to gain financial security leading ultimately to the Burning of the Mortgage in 2009.

An intelligent and capable individual, he devoted himself to a life of service to the church and many organizations in the Armenian community. He was an accomplished individual, a true friend and had chaired so many events that he was known as “Mr. Chairman.” Mr. Bedros was a loving husband and father and was one of the 16 godfathers of the church. For his sacrificial service to church and community Mr. Bedros Givelekian was awarded the Cilician Eagle, the Prelacy Eagle and was made a Prince of Cilicia. Coincidentally, this posting is made on the exact day of his passing, May 13, 2013. May God Bless his soul.

We are excited to announce that on Sunday, May 15, 2022, we will be celebrating the "60th Anniversary of St Sarkis Church at St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church.

We look forward to celebrating this joyous occasion together!

APPARITION OF THE HOLY CROSS

This Sunday, May 15, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Apparition of the Holy Cross The Apparition of the Cross is the first feast dedicated to the Holy Cross in the Armenian liturgical calendar. It is celebrated in remembrance of the appearance of the sign of the cross over the city of Jerusalem in 351 that remained in the sky for several hours. The apparition extended from Golgotha to the Mount of Olives (about two miles), and was brighter than the sun and was seen by everyone in Jerusalem. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cyril, used this occasion to remind Emperor Constantius of Byzantium of his father’s (Constantine the Great) orthodox faith. Cyril claimed the Apparition was further reason to return to orthodoxy.

Traditionally, the Armenian translation of Cyril of Jerusalem’s message is read on this feast day during the Antastan service prior to the Gospel lection. The Apparition is celebrated by the Armenian and Greek churches. The Greeks observe it on the fixed date of May 7, while the Armenian date is moveable depending on the date of Easter. It is celebrated on the fifth Sunday of Easter.

Patriarch Cyril is a revered Doctor of the Church and he is remembered in the Armenian Church’s liturgical calendar. Here is a short excerpt from his letter about the apparition.

“ In those holy days of the Easter season, on 7 May at about the third hour, a huge cross made of light appeared in the sky above holy Golgotha extending as far as the holy Mount of Olives. It was not revealed to one or two people alone, but it appeared unmistakably to everyone in the city. It was as if one might conclude that one had suffered a momentary optical illusion; it was visible to the human eye above the earth for several hours. The flashes it emitted outshone the rays of the sun, which would have outshone and obscured it themselves if it had not presented the watchers with a more powerful illumination than the sun. It prompted the whole populace at once to run together into the holy church, overcome both with fear and joy at the divine vision. Young and old, men and women of every age, even young girls confined to their rooms at home, natives and foreigners, Christians and pagans visiting from abroad, all together as if with a single voice raised a hymn of praise to God’s Only-Begotten Son the wonder-worker. They had the evidence of their own senses that the holy faith of Christians is not based on the persuasive arguments of philosophy but on the revelation of the Spirit and power; it is not proclaimed by mere human beings but testified from heaven by God Himself .”

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY
THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE (1.1-10)
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (7.14-19)
Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. The Jews were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning without having studied?"
Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"
