2027 Kids First Award

Nomination Form Is Now Live!

Project Harmony is taking nominations for the Kids First Award. This annual award is designed to honor and recognize an individual or group who have made significant contributions to the well-being of abused and neglected children and/or children at risk for abuse or neglect.

The 2027 recipients will be recognized at the Project Harmony’s Speaking of Children Luncheon on Thursday April 29, 2027, at Embassy Suites Omaha – La Vista Hotel & Conference Center. This event will include a 2-day conference providing training and educational opportunities for professionals responding to children in need.

Take a few moments to think of someone you would like to recognize for his/her efforts on behalf of children. This award has become a special way for the partner agencies, Project Harmony Board of Directors, staff and the community-at-large to honor and say "Thank You" to an individual or group on an annual basis.

A Plan That Protects

Project Harmony Legacy Society

Every October, National Estate Planning Awareness Week (this year, October 19–25) reminds us of something simple but easy to put off: a good plan protects the people and causes we love. At Project Harmony, we see every day what it means to protect children and families in their times of need.

Estate planning isn't just about finances or about what happens when you're gone. A solid plan can:

  • Name guardians for minor children
  • Reduce stress for your family during a difficult time
  • Minimize taxes and unnecessary legal costs
  • Ensure your assets go exactly where you want them to
  • Create a legacy that reflects your values

One of the simplest ways to leave a legacy is through a bequest — a gift made through your will or trust. It costs nothing during your lifetime and can be changed at any time. Other popular options include:

  • Gifts of retirement assets (like an IRA)
  • Gifts of appreciated stock or other non-cash assets
  • Charitable trusts, which can provide income to you or your family while ultimately supporting Project Harmony's mission

Donors who include Project Harmony in their estate plans become members of our Legacy Society — a community of people who believe that protecting children shouldn't be limited to their own lifetime. Legacy Society members are honored for their foresight and generosity, and they have the unique satisfaction of knowing their impact will be felt for years to come. If you'd like to learn more about including Project Harmony in your estate plan, we'd love to hear from you. Contact Amy Chisholm, Chief Development Officer, at achisholm@projectharmony.com.

Meet Lt. Michael Wright

Adult Special Victim's Unit

Omaha Police Department

Explain your relationship with Project Harmony.

I am the Lieutenant of the Adult Special Victim's Unit. This position oversees and supervises the Domestic Violence Unit and the Adult Sexual Assault Unit. The Omaha Police Department and Project Harmony maintain an integrated, co-located partnership focused on child advocacy, abuse investigation and anti-trafficking efforts.

What led you to work at Project Harmony?

When certain retirements occurred within the Omaha Police Department, it made way for upward and lateral movement among Command Officers throughout the force. The Adult Special Victim's Unit Lieutenant was among one of the openings. I was offered the position from Captain Kara Starlin with approval by the Chief's office. I had previously worked under Captain Starlin years ago when I was a Detective in the Robbery Unit.

Tell me about someone who has influenced your work or a mentor who has helped the most in your career.

Detective Justin Knapp of the Domestic Violence Unit was one individual who helped influence my decision to work at Project Harmony. We had worked together years ago in the Robbery Unit. He had told me over the years about how great of a work environment Project Harmony was and the important, essential investigations that were conducted out of Project Harmony. It inspired me to be a part of it.

When you are not working, how do you enjoy spending your time?

I’m married with three children, and much of my free time is spent cheering them on at their sporting activities. When I do get some time to myself, I love being outdoors either running or biking.

What is the one thing you are most proud of about your job?

I am proud to be a member of the best Law Enforcement Agency in the Midwest. Having grown up in Omaha and seeing Omaha Police Officers conduct their job in such a professional manner was inspiring. Being granted the title of an Omaha Police Officer upon academy graduation was a very proud moment for me.
