Business Profile

Where Safe Spaces and Neighbourly Faces Meet and Eat

BROCKVILLE – "I want people to know this is a community hub, a safe space for people to come, shop and visit," says Annie Ly, founder of Sweet Ofelia Café & Market.

A childhood dream of playing 'café' has grown into a vibrant Brockville destination where artistic expression, community connection and culinary creativity, come together. From daily menu specials to cooking classes, commercial kitchen rental, and a carefully curated market, Annie has created a space that feeds the community.

Sweet Ofelia Café & Market, a 1000 Islands Rideau Canal Waterways Cafe Adventures participant, offers something for everyone. Patrons enjoy freshly prepared specialty drinks such as bubble teas and coffees, along with daily specials like Annie's favourite braised pork belly banh mi, rice paper fresh rolls, turkey club sandwiches, and chickpea salad croissants.

"Our market features locally sourced products, trendy international treats and unique gifts," Annie explains. The commercial kitchen hosts adult and kids' cooking classes, craft workshops, and events. Classes start at $55 and are a fun way to learn skills; suitable for team-building experiences, corporate learning events, and catered gatherings.

A spontaneous trip to the 1000 Islands changed everything for Annie. After buying a toy and treats for daughter Ofelia (café's namesake), she felt a pull she couldn’t ignore. With the support of her life partner, she left the high-stress corporate world that afforded a steady paycheck to open Sweet Ofelia Café, embracing both risk and possibility.

Continuing to focus on quality, customer connection and community, the shop's offerings have expanded to include bubble tea, frozen foods and imported groceries. Annie shares. “I care and am compelled towards what customers like.”

In 2024, Annie took another risk and increased her shop's area by adding the commercial kitchen. "We broke through the wall and I was excited. As the renovation progressed I just wanted things to get going. Eventually, it opened and revenue started flowing. Now the space is so busy," she shared.

Annie’s philosophy is to build meaningful connections and youth development, noting, “If we support youth, we invest in the growth of our community as a whole. Hopefully they will either decide to live here or return later.”

Looking ahead, she envisions creating a chef mentorship program, continuing her mission to foster skills, creativity, and community engagement. With this, Sweet Ofelia Café & Market will remain a dynamic hub for food, community, and learning.

Province Moves Forward with Plan to Study Electrical Needs

JOHNSTOWN—Ontario is taking proactive steps to secure the energy future of Leeds Grenville through long-term transmission planning in partnership with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce joined MPP Steve Clark to announce the study, which will guide infrastructure investments needed to support population growth, new housing, and business expansion across eastern Ontario.

With electricity demand rising as more homes, businesses, and industries switch to electric power, the government is committed to ensuring the region has the tools to attract investment, deliver reliable energy, and fuel economic growth. “Communities like Edwardsburgh Cardinal are poised for growth,” said MPP Clark. “We just need the electricity capacity to keep pace with those opportunities, and today’s announcement is a step forward in making that happen.”

Minister Lecce added: “Ontario's plan will ensure we meet rising energy demand in eastern Ontario to power more homes, attract jobs, and fuel a strong economy. We’re not waiting for challenges

to arise – we’re planning ahead so families, farms, and businesses have access to affordable energy for generations to come.” He also credited Leeds Grenville stakeholders, municipal partners, along with MPP Clark's tenacity helped to bring this initiative to fruition. "Good corporate citizens and strong leaders," said Lecce, "whose voices are heard unapologetically defending your community."

This announcement came on the heels of an early morning roundtable discussion with the Minister at HFI Pyrotechnics that "set the table for today's announcement," said MPP Clark. Attending dignitaries welcomed the energy announcement, including United Counties Warden Corinna Smith-Gatcke, Edwardsburgh Cardinal Mayor Tory Deschamps, and Greenfield Global plant manager Brendan Bland, all of whom emphasized the importance of energy infrastructure to support housing, business investment, and long-term growth. This initiative also supports Ontario’s first comprehensive energy plan, Energy for Generations, designed to ensure the province has the power it needs to strengthen the economy now and into the future.

Leeds Grenville Small Business Summer Company students enjoy a special visit from the Honourable Nina Tangri, Ontario’s Associate Minister of Small Business on August 20.

The informal gathering brought together Minister Tangri, MPP Steve Clark, Warden Corinna Smith-Gatcke, Economic Development Manager Ann Weir, program staff, and student entrepreneurs for a discussion on youth entrepreneurship. Students shared their challenges, lessons learned, and future goals, highlighting the program’s role in building business skills, confidence, and community connections.

“Summer Company is a wonderful platform for young people across the province to turn a bright idea into a viable business,” said Minister Tangri. MPP Steve Clark added, “Small businesses and the innovative entrepreneurs who run them are the heart of our local economy. I’m proud of our government’s support for these young people and this program.”

This summer marked the 25th anniversary of the program. Students launched and operated their own businesses with support from local mentors

that included Mitchell Beattie of Beattie Film, Wendy Onstein of Wedding Ceremonies by Wendy, Brodie Church of Brodie Church Consulting, and Kevin Savoy of ByNan Business Solutions. Training included business foundations, marketing and a workshop.

Over the summer, participants gained valuable experience by leading their businesses, tackling challenges through creativity, perseverance, and support from the local community.

Leeds Grenville Warden Corinna Smith-Gatcke noted at the graduation celebration held August 21, “This program is about more than starting a business, it’s about preparing our youth for their future, building networks, and developing skills they can carry forward.”

Funded by the Province of Ontario, the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, and the City of Brockville, the program provides up to $3,000 for each student to start and run their own business.
