Good afternoon,
Last night, the Trump Administration’s Office of Management & Budget (OMB) released a memo directing all federal agencies to "temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance, and other relevant agency activities that may be implicated by the executive orders."
No one can say with certainty what the executive order means, and we have been in touch all day long with our federal and state partners to better understand the specific impacts of any disruptions in federal funding to Connecticut’s homeless population. The information is changing rapidly, as exemplified by an updated memo sent just this afternoon.
Taking a ‘wait-and-see’ posture with a vulnerable population like those we serve is hard to do, but we have a skilled commissioner in the state Department of Housing and other agencies, we have an active governor and attorney general who understand what is at stake for people experiencing homelessness in our state and who are plugged in and leading the cause with our congressional delegation in Washington.
We are fully devoted to determine the specific potential impact that any federal funding freeze will have on Connecticut’s homelessness response system so our allies at the state and nation’s capitals have what they need to see us through.
The word ‘freeze’ holds a powerful and deeply personal meaning for our neighbors who are out in the cold of winter. Even a brief pause in services can mean the difference between life and death. We are committed, through our partnerships and coalition, to ensure that whatever the short and long term effects of this order are, that they will not undermine the tireless work of our providers to prevent, assist, and house those experiencing homelessness in our state.
In solidarity,
Sarah Fox
